'57 Ford front drums
Do you guys know if these drums would have been factory issue on a '57 Ranchero? They measure 11" diameter and 3" wide. I had all of my drums turned but two of the four had to be cut pretty good to get them round. I know I'm gonna need to get some in the near future and just want to make sure I get the right ones. I've look in the various restoration catelogues but none of them mention the size.
thanks David |

Re: '57 Ford front drums
Interesting delema
The 3" drums are station wagon and taxi/police options.Ranchero"s were a wagon spin off sort of. Looking in the Ford book it calls this 11" drum which is 3" wide to fit a 2 1/2 wide brake shoe size. I have an Edsel wagon which uses the same 11" X 3" drum. Without removing the wheel etc to take a tape measure to the brake shoe width (I"m too lazy) I dont know if it really is a 3" drum on a 2 1/2 wide brake shoe???? Can you measure your brake shoe width and let us know? Supposedly these 11" X 3" drum/hub assemblys are the same as on the 58 and 59 T Birds which are pleantyful. I too would like to acquire some front assemblys. The rear drums are availiable as reproductions. Oldmics |

Re: '57 Ford front drums
Thanks Oldmics!
I did measure the shoes and they are 3 inches wide. I bought the Ranchero from 40Cpe and he pulled these drums, backing plates, etc from another rusted-out Ranchero. Neither one of us are certain if the rusted-out Ranchero was "born" with these or not. It's interesting that you mention the Edsel because I was wondering if perhaps this size drum came from an Edsel or maybe a Skyliner or something. |

Re: '57 Ford front drums
The Edsel parts book that I have specs part# B7A 1102 B for my wagon.
I measured a drum that is off of my Edsel and it is the same as you have measuring 11" X 3". Actually just slightly short of the 3"but close enough to call it a 3" The same part#B7A 1102 B is called for in my 57 Ford parts book for Police/taxicab installations which are supposedly also 3" wide brake shoes. No specific listing for brakes on the Ranchero in the 57 parts book. Now in my newest Ford parts book (49-59) it lists hub and drum assembly front as part# COAA 1102-C as an 11" I.D. using a 2 1/2" brake surface. COAA 1102-C is utilised on the 57-59 Police Interceptor and Taxicab applications as well as the 58 Thunderbird. I"m pretty sure the COAA 1102-C superseeded the B7A 1102 B part# I believe its a safe bet that this COAA 1102-C assembly is the ticket for both of us. Time to start diggin for 58-59 T Bird front end assemblys. As far as the Ranchero being born with those parts-I believe that it could have been ordered with the heavy duty brakes as an option, perhaps the Ranchero did have the H.D. brakes as a standard feature since it was a heavy duty hauling truck kinda vehicle. Heavy loads would have required better braking systems. I can say for sure that the 3" wide brakes were availiable. Oldmics |

Re: '57 Ford front drums
Both my 57 Ranchero and 57 Ranchwagon have 2 1/4 ' shoes. My 60 2dr Ranchwagon has 3" shoes.

Re: '57 Ford front drums
Does the 1956 Ranch Wagon also take the 11 x 3" drums for the front. I'm having a hard time finding a pair of these for mine. Every catalog I look at, it states "except wagon". My front shoes are 2 1/4". Where could I go to find these?
Thanks |

Re: '57 Ford front drums
I have not had to look for drums yet. NAPA carries the 3" shoes. I'm wondering if the 61 - 64 Bird drums might fit? They are available.

Re: '57 Ford front drums
I have a pair of 62 Bird front drums, the hub and the drum are cast as one piece. The 60 wagon is cast as one piece also. Have the wagon up on stands right now so it'll be no problem to pull and compare.

Re: '57 Ford front drums
That's interesting that the hub and drum are cast as one piece. You can see in the picture I posted that mine are two separate items.

To Oldmics. God bless you for saving the Edsel. I have a '58 Ranger that is all but complete. Going on for the interior in the morning.
