Speedo drive gear
Hey guys, I have a 34 pickup, I replaced the driveshaft seal, bearing race and bearing, easy peasy, knock the seal back in, the race, it hast to snap in to its little nitch, cant go in wrong, bearing goes in, the thrust washer and then the speedo gear and snap ring.
So I posted a pic, you can see there is a lotta room between the speedo gear and the snap ring groove. Thats not right is it ? |

Re: Speedo drive gear
Your photo does not identify front from rear and is not detailed to see the snap ring. About how much play do you have? Some is OK which has already been pointed out. Do you have the drive shaft gear on correctly?

Re: Speedo drive gear
I 'think' the end play is designed so that as the rear end swings through an arc with suspension travel, even though the actual movement isn't as much up by the clam shell, having the speedo drive gear able to 'float' allows it to remain in mesh at all times with the turtle gear.

Re: Speedo drive gear
I have just checked an original 34 rear end & torque tube assy that I have, & the speedo drive gear has about 3/16" of movement back & forward on the spline.
It appears to have an even amount of clearance each side when it is lined up with the centre of the cable drive housing. Phil. |

Re: Speedo drive gear
Yes, they're designed to have that.
