Re: late oil pressure
IIRC, those oil pressure switches activate at 5-7lbs. Today’s replacements who knows?
If tightening the gland nut (thanks for reminding me what it’s called) doesn’t solve it, I’d replace the oil filter next. With a Wix or other good brand, not the F one. Cheap and easy, and I always pre fill them as full as I dare and let it soak in before I installed it. I’d try everything simple before I pulled the pump. You know it works (eventually) so the pressure bypass would be the only thing to look at. |

late oil pressure
That's a good point, and the pressure relief bypass valve is "right there" on the external pump. I wonder if it's likely stuck in the open position?

Re: late oil pressure
Try this. Change the oil filter. Put on a Motorcraft FL-1A. See what happens. There is a little 50 cent piece in there called a drain back valve. You know, sometimes the simple stuff gets us every time.

If it is holding 40PSI after driving and the oil pressure holds @ 40PSI, it indicates the pump and/or engine is in fairly good condition (IMO). Proper inlet tube integrity will give you piece of mind. Now you also might want to pull the right rocker cover and confirm the valve-train is being lubricated. Any idea of how many miles are on it? Also, consider a fresh oil change with a quality oil filter (MOTORCRAFT - WIX) |

Re: late oil pressure
Seeking used OP senders; if there are any junk yards near where you live, any oil pressure sender from Fords or MOPARS should be the same, mid 50's, 60's 70's 80's and 90's. Small silver colored are for a light, large can gold colored for a gauge. For years where I worked on the motor line at Ford, the gold switches came in a big box from Chrysler in Michigan.

Re: late oil pressure
Hopefully your oil pressure gauge is a permanent installation.

Re: late oil pressure
Forgot to ask, is your oil filter a cartridge type or spin-on?
The PN for that seal is BEST GASKET - #1474 Oil Pump Inlet Tube Fitting Maybe use that PN to cross to FEL-PRO or VICTOR. |
