Default Steering Gear Box

How difficult is it to rebuild a 1928 - two tooth steering gear box ? Can it be worked on while it is in the car ?

The 1928 came with a 7 tooth steering sector. It might best to check it out.

I did mine. Not to difficult. You will have to remove from the car . The upper bushing is very difficult to remove and replace to get it back in the right place. I did not remove mine. The box is much better now, I think the play I have now is the worn parts in the front end it self.

My opinion: Big job because you have to put in a new worm gear along with a new sector. The wear is on the worm, on center and you can't adjust it out. Good luck.

Many early cars had the steering boxes replaced with the later 2 tooth versions. Difficult to rebuild but worth it. You have to remove it from the car. As Jackson said, the center of the worm gear, where the tooth sits during most of the driving, gets most of the wear. This makes it impossible to adjust without binding at the ends.

Another option is to replace it with an F-100 steering box. That box is easier to steer and make it seem like the A almost has power steering.

First of all, I know my ‘28 has a 7 tooth.

nkaminar - what is a F 100 steering box. Sounds interesting..

F-100 steering box comes from 1950's F-100 truck. Randy Gross sells a bolt on unit fitted to the Model A. Call him at 714-292-8660. If you are not concerned about a points car this is an excellent unit that improves the steering quite a bit. It almost feels like power steering.

i have installed a f-100 steering box in a model A before.
too much work and modification for the novice to do at home.
better off to rebuild the original box.

I, too, have installed an F100 steering box in my Model A. I bought it as a kit and it was a slam dunk, and at the time was pretty much a "novice". Works like a charm.

As has been suggested above, the adjustments on a 7 tooth steering box are limited. That doesn't mean they can't be made to be very good. I suggest a machinist who can make eccentric sector shaft bushes and adjust them to get full engagement between the worm and sector. Then, you'll never wear it out and there will be little to no free play.

When I considered the cost of parts to rebuild the 7 tooth on my ‘28, I opted to install a Randy Gross F100 conversion. I’m glad I did, for the quality of the box he supplied, the pleasure of dealing with Randy, and the steering feel after conversion.
