Default Bumper Irons on Rear of OCPU

I would like any information regarding the use of Sedan rear bumper irons on the rear of a 28/29 PU.
30/31 irons on the rear of a standard 28/29 bedded PU.
Please share your success with this modification.

Check to see if you need to relocate your license plate when you add the bumper. I had to relocate mine to the top of the bracket to be visible.

Not sure but I think 30/31 irons will fit 28/29. However, regardless of year, irons will not reach the end of the bed unless they are lengthened somehow. I don't like the look of such extensions, but that's just me. I suppose the bumper wouldn't provide much protection otherwise, except maybe for the ends of the fenders. As noted above, license bracket may have to be modified.

I installed rear bumper etts on our 1931 Model A pick up. I think that I used tudor sedan bumper braces. I had to move the brace to body mounts to fit the body properly. They now look and fit very professional. Important to have rear fender protection. And I can still drop my tail gate with out damaging the paint on the tail gate against the bumper. And yes, having a narrow box, I will be moving my license plate to above the left tail light. In time, in time.

I have a 30 PU with the bumperettes, Would not know how to ID how it is attached, not that familiar with parts/irons.

Am currently running with the license plate partially hidden, have not got around to changing it yet, so Charlie thanks for your picture/info, now know what to do.

Can get you pictures of mine and how they are installed if interested.

Let me know, will take me a day or 2 to get pictures.

Yes, I know that pickups did not come with a back bumper. Didn't come with a lot of what you see in the picture below, but that's the way it goes. (BTW, since this picture was taken, the license plate has been moved to under the center of the bed above the bumper and trailer hitch, between the back-up lights.)

Hi Russ,

Was able to get pictures, attached.

2 mounting bolts to the frame on each side for the irons. truck also has what looks like a fabricates hitch bar between the Bumperetts. Not very sturdy, lightweight, bar has a cutouts in it for the Bumperetts (Bumperetts do not attach at the cutouts).. Has a hole in the middle lengthwise, assume for attaching a clevis. Hole does not look big enough for a hitch ball. The bar uses the Bumperette bolts and an additional a 3rd bolt on each side to the frame

As you can see and mentioned by another post, the Bumperette on the rear drivers side blocks the license plate, mounting it above the taillight is a solution.

30 Closed Cab PU, thanks for the pics. My irons are supposed to be here tomorrow. I see I have a few decisions to make.

The irons I used were lengthened by about 6" by a previous owner.

I could use some better shots. I need to see the route the irons take, and to where on the frame they bolt.
Do your irons look like they extended?

I will see if I can take pictures tomorrow, my A is not currently at my house. Please send me pictures of your irons. Not quite sure what you mean by extended. Is another way to say they are modified so they are longer ?

OK, more pictures, and looking at the pictures I can see where it may be confusing. Will do my best to describe.

Picture 2 looking at the Nut side of the mounting,
The two on the right are for mounting the bumper on the side of the frame we are looking at.

The two nuts on the right are also used for mounting the tow bar, but bar is mounted on the on the head side of the frame.

The piece of horizontal metal on the top, coming out toward you is part of the Tow bar

The left nut is used as a 3rd mounting for the Tow bar, which is on the head side of the frame.

Picture 3, looking at the Head side of the mounting
All thre Heads are going throghhteh tow bar on this side of the frame. The angle iron metal piece and the verticle pice are all one piece and part of the tow bar.

Hope this helps, if need additional clarification let me know.

Since I plan on no hitch, the outer end of the irons will be quite simple. What baffles me is the three mounting points native to the irons. I would like to use as much of the original fastening points so they can withstand a good bump or two. I need to know what attachment points to use and where are they. My iron photo attached.

30 closed cap PU, thanks for the photos, but still need to know how to anchor the irons.

I did mine a few years ago, I know I made up an Oak cross member. I'll look tomorrow and take a pic.

Mine look a lot different, almost seems mine most of the long straight length has been cut off, then holes drilled in the frame and the irons for mounting, no wonder we were confused. I do not know how the type yu have mount, sorry I could not help.
