Re: I maybe going to do something I never thought I would do
Hey Dusty,
I will miss that beautiful green Model A, when it's gone ! You must be a 'youngster', or having never lived on a farm, eh ? If your the former, I say go for it with gusto ! If you have never worked farming, yup it can hurt you, if doing it all by yourself. Now if all the manual labor doesn't kill you, it will make you stronger. Talking of hurt, be careful around horses. Do you know that a grown horse has a brain the size of a walnut ? AND, horses love to eat GREEN things ! Best of luck to you. I'd keep the A ,if at all feasible, as they are hard to reacquire when money if tight. |

Re: I maybe going to do something I never thought I would do
I sold two different Model A's at different times because of life and money issues and have regretted it ever since. I have since replaced one at ten times the selling price, but it still isn't the one that my mother bought me and that I learned to drive on. If at all possible tuck it away safely and cover it up with a nice soft blanket and I almost guarantee that you will be glad you did. Jim.

Re: I maybe going to do something I never thought I would do
We had shire and percheron draft horses and the carriages and wagons for driving them. We now have 2 A's and a 33 pickup, sold the horses and wagons and gave all work away for free. Life is short, get your enjoyment and pleasures while you can,if horses are what you now want, enjoy them as long as you are able.

Re: I maybe going to do something I never thought I would do
Dusty, why don't you sell the green monster and use some of the money to buy an old "rumper dumper" Model A tudor and just use it on the farm and have fun with it, don't worry about rattles or paint, that's what I plan to do and still have a Model A, as a matter of fact if I just keep my doodlebug I'll be happy.
Good luck, Barry |

Very hard choice, but in the end these cars have a life of their own. --we're all just the current caretakers...

Re: I maybe going to do something I never thought I would do
Since you appear to be asking for opinions, heres mine: The worst car mistakes I have ever made are selling cars I really enjoyed. Now that I'm in the later part of the golden years I really regret selling many of them, especially the ones with souls, like the early Fords. My advice is to keep the Model A and start driving it more. You probably can't buy a new Kubota for what you can get out of the model A. A used 8N or 9N will do all the Kubota will and cost way less. More current Fords are cheaper yet. I've been looking at lots of good used tractor loaders with scrapers for under 4K.

Re: I maybe going to do something I never thought I would do
I sold some cars that were really special to me in the 1960's and 1970's including a 1967 GTO convertible and a 1967 Corvette convertible because I really needed the money for seemingly basic needs. I have always regretted it and spent a few decades with not very special cars-until I got my Model A's!

I would not get rid of the 40 horses just to care for several others, thats my opinion.

Just remember: a horse is the perfect way to convert good green money into ordinary brown horse manure.

As much as I like horses and horseback riding, I wouldn't want to be saddled with the work and expense.

Re: I maybe going to do something I never thought I would do
Dusty, Don't sell it unless you really have to, I've loved this car from the first time you put the picture up. If you changed the color it wouldn't be the same. If I had the extra money I would hit you up about it. Put it in the barn and this summer you will enjoy it again . I only have 1 horse now but remember they eat on their own as soon as the grass is up and next winter they will be on welfare again and keep you busy. PLEASE DON'T SELL. Have fun modelAtony Lfayette, LA

Re: I maybe going to do something I never thought I would do
There has not been a bad thought or opinion here, that's why I like you guys. Yes horses eat money and it's is a lot of work but isn't it about what makes you happy? If any body here believes Model As are cheap than they are lying to their self. Can I keep my car?of course. I just thought with the time spent doing the farm thing maybe the money could be spent with my current passion. Also as far as what the car is worth and what I could buy? Well I have twice turned down enough money to buy 4 wheel drive sub compact with all the attachments so it is doable. I appreciate the thoughts and again I am thinking out loud, just talking about will lead me in the right direction.

Re: I maybe going to do something I never thought I would do
Like others I too have sold cars I wish I hadn't. Passions change over time so if you sell the car don't be surprised if ten years down the road your looking for another A. Happened with me except with Oldsmobile. OBTW, I've been farming all my life. My brother and I handle over 3000 acres of cropland and pasture. I'm also the head mechanic, married and have a teenage son. Until 7 years ago we also had a dairy (soooo glad those DAMNED cows are gone). My '71 Cutlass spent most of the time parked. Put less than a 100 miles a year on it, no time for it. Sold it thinking I could use the money elsewhere. Regret it now. Finally came to the realization some things on the farm can wait.
Just my experience. I did find another Olds, 1966 f-85 Deluxe. Will take it and our A to my grave.

You are a wise man Tom. My wife looks after the horses and I bought a farm that has a former horse arena on it. The barn part is about 75 by 150 and she can even ride in the winter, a rarity in Canada. and the other end is 50 by 75 for my cars. I rent out the land to sharecrop. Kind of like having your cake and eating it too ! Now we are both very happy. Wayne |
