Art, take a look at post #9 at the beginning of this thread. The hole you're prepossessing on the left rear of the block connected to the thermostat bypass tube will work just as well as one in the rear of the block. Just make it as low and to the rear as possible.

Ol Jenny, if you have a 6 volt system, use a good Stewart Warner mechanical water temp gauge. Stay away from the cheap mechanical gauges as their temperature response is slow.

The unit is tapped with both size holes, for either mechanical or electrical style, but comes with plugs. I use the smaller, electrical model, leaving the larger opening available for my hot water heater input.

That's what I did. I'm using a 2" Autometer electric gauge.

AL in NY, or anyone, you advised to stay away from cheap mechanical water temp gauges for the VP Thermostat Housing setup. Are the Deluxe Stewart Warner Mechanical gauges of adequate quality in your opinion? Cost $60 to $75 and look reasonably period. I am really open to suggestions. I am 6 volt and do not have plans for a heater.

For what it's worth, the electric temp gauges require some disconnect arrangement or they will slowly drain the battery. I use an ignition switch that has a third, ACCESSORY position, which allows me to automatically disconnect temperature gauge (and alternator) with the key.

Along with the benefit, every step away from stock comes with a price, which may include another step.

While on a trip last summer, 400 miles from home, and just for a temporary, I bought a "cheap" ($20) mechanical water temp gauge at O'Riley's. I was able to install it in the 1/2" port on the VP Housing and it worked fine. For my permanent gauge, I have an AutoMeter 12v electric installed in the smaller port, primarily because I intend to install a heater in the larger port.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I had a wonderful conversation with Vintage Precision about their thermostat housing. Great people--- VP Housing on the way, as well as a SW Deluxe Mechanical Water Temp gauge. Waiting for a rebuilt Zenith to arrive from Bert's, bring on the touring season.

That is the gauge I am using; it works well.
It is also very accurate as I have checked it with my IR laser temperature "gun" pointed at that location on the housing.

But Mark! It's really really pretty. (I have the 2-holer and with a little modification to fit my needs, it's just perfect!)

On kinda a side note, when I was installing my engine I put a mechanical temp gauge sending unit in the lower pipe return because I didn't like the unsightly installation up top. I know that it’s seeing the cooled water coming from the radiator but it still gives me the point of reference. During the summer here in Florida it runs about 160 or so. The sender is on the underside placed in a welded bung. I then route the sender tube up with the Genny harness to the terminal box.

Here's the "thermostat" that I use to warm the car. Works great, and never fails.

It takes about 5-6 minutes for the car to warm to the 160 degree mark on the motometer. When it hits the mark I want, I simply lift the "thermostat" off the radiator and put it back in the garage for next time. Then, drive the car.

I imagine that Mark or Tom will have something to say...
