Default Do You "Save" Parts for a Rainy Day?

Do you have a collection of parts that you've store up for the day when you might need them?

I just can't throw away any part that came off my car, unless I know it was a repro to begin with. So, I've got two original generators, and a head and a collection of worn parts and some nuts and bolts. Oh yeah, and a spare engine. The other day on the Barn a guy said he had wheels and tires for sale. I wanted them badly. Someone told me a long time ago that if I ever came across original wheels I should get them as they are scarce.

Anyway, I've never been to a swap meet or car show so I don't have much put by for a rainy day. Should I?

What do you keep?

Never been to a swap meet??? You need to get out more!

I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it!

Now, if I could just find it when I need it.

I'm glad I'm not like that.

I'm planning to use those 85 head gaskets and 265 spark plugs.

For my Model B I have a good spare fuel pump and about 35 extra rebuilt ones, just in case.
So what is the proper name for YOUR AFFLICTION?? If I had that name, maybe I could whip up a serum to cure it. Bill Williamson M.D. B.S. A.A.G.G. P.C. Etc.

Lets see if these pictures work. Just the odd part, not to mention the 6 spare frames. 12 front ends & 12 rear ends, Plus a few more ton, You can never have too much , Least its been saved from scrap & maybe some one can use it to put another A on the road.

That's way too organized for me. In my garage I have a saying, "I know exactly where it might be!"

If I have the rebuilt part on the shelf, then the one on the car won't break..........

I sure hope I don't need it later.

I have slowed down on my aquistions of cast iron Zeniths the last few years, however.

When I purchased by e28 Phaeton ten years ago, it came with 12 large crates of early 28 parts accumulated over many years by the previous owner. He was buying parts in the 70's and 80's when he could find stuff more easily. A careful sorting of the parts revealed some really neat finds. I organized them by type of parts (brakes, engine, etc.) and stored in my barn.

So far, no need to replace anything on the car.

I have this same problem. 2 running Model A's, 3 non-running Model A's, 10+ starters, 10+ generators, bulbs, brakes, drums, wheels, tires, floor mats, doors, fenders, hoods.....I bought 3 Model A's and a storage unit full of parts from an older gentleman. Now I just need to retire, so I can find time to work on the cars. But when I find the time, I will have plenty of parts!

I have a cabinet in my garage filled with bin boxes, labeled in alphabetical order, from ameters down to windshield wipers where I store small parts that I buy at swapmeets. I usually have what I need.

There are odds and ends on my desk, there is something conforting about having part of a project close by. I'm always amazed about something I've walked by for years that for some unknown reason gets put on eBay or in the classified ad section. If it turns into 20-50 dollars why was I walking past it for all those years? Bob

Eternal truths:

1. Humphrey Bogart never made a bad movie;
2. Crystal Gayle never sang a bad song;
3. You can't have too many spare Model A parts.

Do I save Model A parts for a rainy day? Only when I can get them.

I try not to hold onto basic chassis and engine parts as they can easially be replaced. I do keep good castings when I find them, water inlets, crankshaft pulleys, water pump housings, and intake manifolds. They are parts that easially break. I keep sheetmetal if it's for something I'm working on. The stuff I like are the little items such as hub caps, valve stem hardware, NOS rubber parts including hoses, NOS wiring, original spark plugs, pop outs, speedometers, ampmeters, etc, etc. If I come across rare early stuff, I hold onto them. Why? Because I like the stuff!

Yea ,but hording 35,excuse me 34 he sold 1 "B" fuel pumps is a little much. Sorry Vince but this amount you have rubs me the wrong way. Especially when theres a need for them in the hobby. This is what drives the prices up. ken ct.

Only keep the rare stuff or that you know you are going to use-A parts are plentiful, Thank God!

Now when dealing with a Maxwell or Hudson.... well that's another story.

At one time I had parts in the attic, under my desk at work, behind furniture and doors and half of a rented mini storage until I realized I don't drive my car that much to need so many extra parts. I sold or traded them all except for one steamer trunk size box full of the more hard-to-find smaller parts. It was fun to help others get the parts they needed.

Hilarious! I had no idea. Amazing.
If I can get my wife to read this thread she'll surely appreciate my self-control and reward me with a radiator shell, or a pop-out.
