Default Does your Coupe have a Trunk or Rumble seat

After reading the thread about this the other day I am wondering how many have a trunk. When I was looking for my car all the coupes I looked at had a rumble seat I was looking for a trunk.

Our rumble seat is worthless. The cushions spend more time in the garage for luggage space than in the car. Retreiving suit cases over the side is a pain. Leprechons fit comfortably, but nobody else. People try to climb in using the tail light bracket. It would be a trunk by now, but the wife thinks its cute, so I lose. *Sigh*

Rumble Seat here ,great for Parades and you can remove it fairly easy if you want to,I guess it depends on how you gonna use the car .

Years ago, first had a rumble seat, but when I bought it, (early 1930 Coupe), it came with neither a trunk or rumble seat.

Seriously, when I got it as the 3rd owner, it came with a truck license plate with a neat wood box that the first farmer-owner installed. When the second owner bought it, it came with a box & a truck license plate. Several people converted trunks & rumble seats into wood truck beds, partly because of additional storage & partly because these "Conservative" Depression Era Owners saw that state licenses for trucks were only $1.00 -- cars were $2.00.

I remember when the first owner still had a rumble seat, he came to church with the 2 oldest sons in the rumble seat, & other 2 younger sons in front with parents.

Totally dismantled at present & hope to restore it with a trunk primarly because of safety with faster traffic on present day hard surfaced highways, & far more population density with far more cars on highway at higher speeds; however, not at all against rumble seats where owners may have access to low density populated areas with an abudance of scenic, undeveloped back roads on whcih to travel.

I have a '30 Deluxe Coupe. It has a rumble seat and that's what I was looking for when I bought the car a dozen years ago. However, there are many times when I would have preferred a trunk. Much more practical.

Regretably I followed the "rumble seat fad " 40 years ago and converted my coupe from original trunk to rumble and installed a roll down rear window. If I could do it over, I would keep the original trunk but still put in a roll down rear window. Forget about the rumble unless it's an original Ford rumble.

Fell for the unique charm of a rumble years ago. Now with just a couple of hours on the rumble, seems that the seat would injure anyone small enough to be comfortable in it and I'm stuck with a reverse lid and long ago gave away the seats. Can really slam shut on any kind of impact. Another job for the Darwin Award. As for Parades? Not my kind of fun. Few exist around Los Angeles and fewer local As can move that slowly without overheating. Good Luck: Fred A

I guess if an "A" model coupe is the only transportion you have , You might need a trunk for your luggage to go on vacation, But most people nowdays fly, or use a modern auto.
To me an "A" model coupe with a rumble seat is what most people enjoy talking about ,..... "Not a boring ole trunk" .
And remember, It's a proven fact that "A" model's with rumble seats go faster .

Is that why people with rumble seats and no passengers drive around with the lid open? It helps to hold the rear end down at high speeds?

I think that the reason people ride with the rumble seat open with no passengers is because it is cooler. the rumble lid catches the wind and forces the cooler air past the sides of the seat and in to the cab. Its not as good as air condition but does make the inside of the cab more comfortable in t
e hellish Alabama summer temperatures. The more ventilation the better in summer.

My dad had a 30 Hudson coupe with a rumble seat. It wasn't too bad with just Mom, Dad and I. I usually sat in front between them but then the twins came along and we kids had the rumble, rain or shine. Don't have much use for them anymore.

My coupe came out with a trunk. I am currently restoreing it and was set on installing a rumble seat due in part to all of the comments I got when I was out in the car with a trunk and my daughters wanted to ride in the parades. I would really like the storage space as I would like to travel a bit in it. I take many bike trips on my Harleys across the country. I would really like to experience small town america in the Model A. I am going back with the trunk. AS I think it should be left as orignal.

This reminds me of a story that a preacher (brother Jerry) once told me. Brother Jerry would take his 1930 coupe with a rumble seat to the local nurseing home to show the patience. One old guy that use to own the Chrysler Plymouth dealership said that he wanted to go to hell in a rumble seat. Brother Jerry said NO, NO, mr. Anderson, you don't want to go there!!!!!!! The old guy said yes I do want to go to hell in a rumble seat because if I had to ride in a rumble seat, I'll be glad when I get there!!! The old guy remembered the rumble seat and having to ride in bad weather and in a jokeing way felt that Hell would be better.

When I was little, my grand dad had an early 30 with rumble. Now that I have a young child I'm looking forward to seeing her ear to ear grin that first ride in our late 30.

Back in the 70's when my son was about 7 or 8 years old and we were at the Turlock swap meet looking at Model A's. I was showing him some with rumble seats. and told him I wanted to put a rumble seat in our coupe. He look them over real good and told me nope I don't like them. I said don't you think it would be fun to ride in a rumble seat "Nope I don't like them". And so I didn't put one in. And guess what he still don't like them.

I have a late 31 deluxe coupe that came with a trunk. I almost converted it to a rumble seat as one of the first things to do to the car and even bought the cushions. But after actually touring with the car, I loved the trunk and didn't convert it. Glad I kept it a trunk. I will be installing the roll down rear window though with all original parts I've been collecting over the years. The cabriolet has a rumble seat, and it's neat, but the cushions do come out occasionally for luggage.

Roadster here, not a coupe. Has rumble seat and a luggage rack with a big “steamer style” trunk. All the tools, oil, rags, etc go in the trunk. The occasional overflow goes in the rumble seat but I’m careful not to put anything heavy in there. It’s too hard to lean way over and lift it over the side.

31 Coupe. I have a trunk. It sure comes in handy when on an extended tour. I always carry spare parts and tools. I also have plenty of room for luggage and a small cooler when touring. Works great for me!

Yes I put a rumble seat in my 31 deluxe coupe, car was all pieces when I started the restoration in 1981. There has been 4 generations of our family that have ridden in the rumble seat, including our 3 sons , then when married ,years ago. We have an ice cream shop about 5 miles away with a beautiful drive along a lake ,that is a route that we haven driven for years, with various family and friends enjoying the ride at their request . We have many pictures of kids over the years,in the rumble seat , anticipating the ride.
As for travelling ,we leave the seat cushion at home for suitcases etc on the floor . I also installed the roll down window back in the 1980’s , love it.

Put lap seat belts in my coupe's rumble seat and quickly realized that the rumble seat is not a safe place for passengers. In a collision (with seat belts), the rumble occupant will be thrown forward into either the coupe's rear window or shorter people will smack the edge of the of rumble seat opening.

The rumble seat makes the coupe a four-passenger vehicle and looks good.
That's my rumor for the day.

Rumble seat, nice to ride in the fall through the woods, however at 6' tall and 240 pounds, takes a while to get in and especially out of.

I have a 30 Coupe that was converted to a Rumble Seat before I bought it as it doesn't look "factory". I have had this car at weddings for photo ops and the brides with their huge wedding dresses always want to get in there with their groom. Often a tough job to get them in there and then back out again.... Also plus sized people alway want to get in as well and it is never a good thing......

I will not travel with any passengers in the rumble seat as I do feel they are dangerous in a sudden stop. I have seen people with their Grandkids in the rumble seat that they have built a wooden 2 x 4 stud frame to prevent the lid from slamming during a panic stop. Also split pool noodles to line the edges of the front edge opening to prevent chipped teeth and black eyes....

My favorite Model A story is at a gas station stop, this woman came over to chat with me. She stated that as a very young gal, her brother and she would be in a Model A couple as their family drove from Northern Illinois to Texas every Summer during the Depression. The family A auto was a standard coupe with a trunk. The 2 kids rode in the back with the lid up for the entire trips. She said it was the best times of her life back then. Now a days, Child and Protective Services would have these parents locked up.

1929 Special Coupe, with a boot, as we say in Australia, or trunk for the USA.
