Re: Rear Main Bearing Cap
Are you looking for the "used car fix" of drilling drain holes in the babbitt to try and slow the leak?? --later today I can take some pic of a cap that was modified by drilling the babbitt and stuffing some packing in the slinger groove---it didn't work in that engine

Re: Rear Main Bearing Cap
Wasn't an article written on same very recently, with photos, (maybe "Restorer" ????), indicating simple modifications to the engine rear main bearing cap to try to help engine oil to return to the oil pan as opposed to leaking?
If so, where may one find same? |

Re: Rear Main Bearing Cap
The article was in Model A news I think, it was about a groove around the bearing behind the oil well, but in front of the thrust---about where the thrust cracks with a drain hole drilled into the return passage, I was told about doing this many years ago by a sleazy used car guy--sawdust in rears, shiming bearing inserts with strips of newspaper, cutting new tread into tires--just be careful to only go through the first layer of cord---etc., it was a way to slow down the river of oil leaking out bad babbitt.
There are many other paths of leakage than just the babbitt, --a bad file job, homemade shims with gaps, rear cam bearing --flywheel housing gasket, too much oil,rag stuffed in filler cap---- |

Re: Rear Main Bearing Cap
Hi,
Mr, Herrmann emailed me earlier in the week with a private email with his same above question searching for an article recently written on rear main bearing modification. I did not think he had ever registered with Fordbarn or AHOOGA, so I encouraged him to do so & hence pose his question(s). Would anyone know where this supposedly newly registered Model A participant would be able to obtain a copy of this recent article? Thanks. |

Re: Rear Main Bearing Cap
Hi Gary WA & Kurt in NJ,
Most probably this is it -- though difficult to believe it was as far back as Jul/Aug 2009 -- but after a few years, one's time definitely appears to become condensed -- like Christmas & April 15 seeming to occur every 3 months or so -- & high school graduation was just a few years back. Anyway, sincerely hope we can help Mr. Herrmann if he has any more Model A questions. Most sincere thanks. |
