Model a habitats
On the "advice on garage" thread, Purdy Swoft posted some pics of his cars, parts, garages and barns. These pics had as much character concentrated into one area as I have ever seen, which me wonder if there has been a thread in the past that showed pics of various Model A's in their various resto/work environments, from cramped one-car garages or sheds to big facilities. I'm a bit embarrased to show pics of my cluttered shop, but I might show mine if someone else will go first.

Here is the roadster when we unloaded it off the trailer and pushed it in the shop. Old man Swoft was real glad to get it, even though it was full of large calibre bullet holes. I really didn't think that I would ever get this lucky!!! xxx

Re: Model a habitats
My side of a standard two-car garage, where our '28 roadster resides. I used kitchen cabinets from Ikea to stash all the parts so I can dolly the car tight against the wall. When there is work to be done, the bride's car has to go outisde; but since I keep it washed & polished for her, it's allowed. There are license plates for the Model A years from the 48 states on the walls & rafters, along with some collectibles to add flavor.

Hello there, Purdy, I saw from one of your photos, that you were running a duel carb updraft finned manifold. I was wondering what make it was and whether or not there was a reproduction of it about. The only one I've seen is a vortex (unfinned) Cheers -Ed

Hello Ed, Here is another pic of my Trojan dual updraft manifold. These cast iron manifolds were made from 1930 untill maybe, the early 50's. I bought this one on eBay from a guy in Texas. As far as I know there is no repro of this manifold or any other cast iron dual updraft manifold being produced. I bought one of the first vortex aluminum manifolds from Charley and haven't yet tried it. Dyno tests have shown that the vortex with two Tillotson model X carbs give a ten horsepower boost to a stock model A engine. The light weight carbs like the Tillotson or marvel should work good with the aluminum manifold and probably wouldn't warp as badly as they do on cast iron manifolds. Just a thought. Purdy . |

Re: Model a habitats
Here is my garage at my mothers house. The body is stacked away at the end of the garage to my right when taking the picture.
Fortunately there is also a sizeable basement where I do all the parts work and keep lathe and other tools and machinery. So the garage is only used for final assembly. Running 1943 Willys Jeep is kept in common parking at the Condo building where we live. Guess I really would like to have everything on one floor next door to my house like many of you other guys have...... |

Re: Model a habitats
Garage - I didn't have one for a few years after I sold my previous property.
About 6 block away I located a fire damaged garage that had become a "Chronic Inebriate Problem". I talked the owner out of it, jacked it up and moved it to my new property last fall, September 2010. Of course I had to test fit my Phaeton in it before I started the move. As soon as we finished the roof it started to snow. Now it is insulated and I have a nice Siegler Oil Stove 400UR that works really good. My Phaeton fits perfectly. Darryl in Fairbanks -25 F right now, glad it has warmed up |

Re: Model a habitats
I also had a plastic garage for a few years, except mine was only a 3 pole frame and not made for any snow load. Every time any snow fell I had to go out immediately and knock it off. I finally put up a metal Menards shelter and just got it done enough to move my Model A over last year. The next day my plastic garage caved in from the snow load the same night the Metrodrome caved in.
I put plastic down and then covered it with a used carpet. It keeps the ground moisture out and makes it nice to crawl under the car. I used boards around the perimeter to raise the plastic up, so snow and rain can't get on top of it and soak the carpet. I also covered the walls and ceiling with aluminum bubble foil to stop the condensation from forming on the roof, and to help insulate it. |

Re: Model a habitats
My story is like Darrly in Fairbanks': When we bought our 1913 Sears & Roebuck house the garage had been turned into a play room and was rotting into the ground. It took 18 months to get it to the 'habitat for insanity' it is today. I can just barely get the doors closed behind the Hudson, but the Model T or the current 31 Phaeton project fit nicely (one at a time) with a reasonable amount of space to work.

Re: Model a habitats
It was not until after 33 years of marriage that I got workspace large enough for working on even a single car. In '05 I built my dream space, 5 car garage - shop, 2300SF. ...and it quickly filled completely.
I have compressed air piped throughout, a small heated "office" space; a number of overhead air filters to control dust; dust collection for my wood working area; toilet, sink and fridge; a lot of painted metal pegboards to keep a lot of stuff visible; a few big skylights for natural light; white epoxy covered floor for better light reflection; engineered fire sprinkler system; and a 24 foot long workbench, 12' covered with 1/4" steel plate. It took several years time to get the city approvals and the building permit for such a big garage in a residential area; but I am sure happy to finally have the space and now the time to make good use of it. I spend at least 20 to 30 hours a week here. |

Re: Model a habitats
I got lucky. A neighbor called late one night to tell me he was unhappy with the way his son-in-law was wrecking out cars in the back yard of the house behind my house. Since he owned it, he decided to sell the backyard which just happened to have a pole barn. As he described it he kind of "by the way, it has an in ground hydraulic hoist. He had never finished the inside of the shop and consequently, never used the hoist. I wired, plumbed, insulated, rocked and moved in. I forced myself to finish all of those steps before I began working on any old cars because, I have seen too many "shops" that never get finished and I recognized that I would never get it organized enough to do all the things I dreamed of doing out there if I jumped into a restoration project. This weekend, the panel gets new tires.

I restored my Tudor 30 years ago, but last summer I had to get the engine rebuilt. Here she is during reinstallation. I've since built a garden shed to get rid of the lawnmower and other non-A clutter.

Re: Model a habitats
Here is a picture of a project that I helped an older guy finish. George F. wanted a 31 pickup. He started out with a nov. 28 leather back fordor and a Dec. 30 AA. He took them both apart over forty years ago and that was as far as he ever got. He asked If I could build a pickup out of what he had. I said yes if he was willing to buy the necessary parts, such as bed, rear fenders, running boards and aprons. Here is a picture of the cab after he installed a new top. He wanted me to straighten it out without replaceing it.

We've got the doors and hood lining up pretty good and the top is looking better. George F. is kind of frugal ,He picked the paint that he wanted at Walmart. Rustoleum looks ok if used with hardner or urethane activator. I used urethane activator here, its hard as nails.

George, leaveing the shop with his finished pickup. It only took three months and no money changed hands. I got the left over AA running gear and the leftover leatherback parts for my efforts. I did do a little night work to speed things along. I work best, by my self. We all had fun, George treated walt and I to a buffet lunch every day at the best restaurant in town. Rustoleum ain't so bad, notice the reflection of the running board in the door!!!!!

Re: Model a habitats
I nearly missed this thread. GREAT pictures. Jim Huseby, now where is your habitat?
Here are 3 pics. of my workshop, which took me 40 years to get this far. It has a car room, with 4 post hoist, Corghi wheel balancer, paint spray gear etc and a machine tool room, complete with bar fridge, armchairs and oxy acetylene barbeque. The machine tools are mostly from 1890 to 1960 -American and English, except for a Swedish lathe/mill combo. Collecting them is another compulsion! Thank you all for sharing your habitats. I love the Ford Barn and look forward every evening to reading the newest thoughts, desires, ideas and methods of similar people. SAJ in New Zealand |

P.S. Nicely done pick-up. I too, found that tractor enamel (Ford 8-n Grey) works very well with an activator. If you don't use it, it takes "forever" for the enamel to harden.

Re: Model a habitats
Thanks, Here is a view of the passenger side. The green is rustoleum, right off the shelf at walmart. I used Kirker ultra-glo UA-1600M urethane activator. It was around seventeen dollars per quart at the time I mixed 3 to one with the activator. in other words 3 quarts rustoleum one quart of activator and you've got a gallon. The activator is clear liquid that is about the thickness or viscosity of thinner. This was still a bit thicker that I wanted to spray. I thinned as needed with urethane grade thinner. I sprayed it with a sixty dollar gravity feed paint gun from Smart Shopper in Kentucky. The paint went on pretty good and I didn't get any runs or dry spots. The paint is very hard in a short time. The activator has a similar effect with the oil base enamel as it does with the acrylic urethane enamel at a lower cost. The top side of the fenders were sprayed with Kirker ultra-glo acrylic urethane enamel black and used the same 3 to 1 mix with the same activator. The fenders have more gloss. I painted my 29 strip down cowl and hoor with rustoleum and used universal super wet look hardner. the hardner makes a huge difference. The rustoleum that the activator is used with is much harder like nails. Its not as good as the expensive paints but some just want to ride and save some cash. Georges truck will spend its time mostly inside.

Re: Model a habitats
Heres my grand daughter, Bailey sitting on my 29 strip down model A while I was building it up. Bailey was three or four years old here. This was taken in late 06 or 07. She is the future of all my stuff. She is a real model A lover. She will be 9 in may and she already wants to drive the model A's . Notice the sunrise red rustoleum paint. I used universal wet look hardner with this one.

Here's where mine usually stay. This was taken after we remodeled the garage. It's not so clean anymore.

Re: Model a habitats
Thanks Ed, You've probably already seen this one, but here is my best performing, cast iron dual updraft manifold. I got this one from Steve at Berts. This Uniflo manifold was made in the thirties after model A production had ended, it has much larger runners and is swan design. The larger runners give full benefit of the larger model B carbs. I think that the Vortex manifold is a copy of the Cragar manifold that was made way back when, it only has model A size runners, but is the only dual updraft manifold that is being produced at this time. Ebay is probably the best place to find a vintage cast iron dual updraft manifold.

Re: Model a habitats
This is the back yard open storage my friend used for his Model A, until he sold it. It sure makes a nice display. Too bad I didn't have better focus. I don't know what happened, usually my camera takes sharp pictures. |

Re: Model a habitats
Here is my humble little garage. I just degreased and painted the engine yesterday and I'm in the process of a front spring and front brake/axle rebuild (among other things). I'm having a lot of fun in the process but I'm going to be anxious to have it back on the road too!

Re: Model a habitats
The commonality between everyone's garage pictured (--or not pictured) above is, ...it is truly amazing just how much room there is inside of the garage when all of it's contents are moved outside!!

Re: Model a habitats
Body work sort of ruffed in. I still had to overhaul the engine and go over the running gear. The complete fix up time was around three years.

I was lucky to get a used top assembly off eBay. I had to do a bit of a fix up on the part that connects to the quarters.

Re: Model a habitats
OK, here is my Model A (and Model T) man cave. It is a little slice of heaven for me. Steve Becker of Bert's Model A in Denver will recognize the black coupe-I'm taking good care of it. That is my 26 T Coupe in the background. And a 31 chassis, for my Brookville Roadster project. I have finally thinned out my stuff to where I only have 3-4 lifetimes worth of project in my shop. But it's good for you-gives you a reason to live to a ripe old age.

Hi Gents,
Two pictures of my caves. A double garage with my 911SC and MGB. A 4 car garage with my 28 Model A RPU, 29 Chevy Phaeton, 250SL Pagoda and as you can see my 67 E Type still fast asleep under her blanky.

Hi Mike,
At least we could hang em sideways. Imagine if they came out upside down, they would have been useless.

Re: Model a habitats
I just saw this thread!! even though it is old I am glad it was found again and I am posting up some pics of "The ANNEX". My grandmother named it when we moved in back in 1982. Gramps and Dad had cars and parts spread all over the town in various garages. They were happy to get it all under one roof. Every day I work in the shop I feel fortunate that I was set up so well.

Re: Model a habitats
Don't feel bad. You are not the only one with no garage. Luckily for me my next door neighbor lets me use his, but my "workshop" is my basement, and my "paint booth" (for any part I can disassemble and take down to my house) is my garden tool room!
BTW how do you find your "tent garage" handles snow load? If I get one I can get another model A! |

Re: Model a habitats
I also have two of those Roundtop plastic shelters with slanted sidewalls. You loose too much space with slanted walls, and from now on I would only buy a metal shelter, such as Menards sells for about $900. Of course nothing beats a real garage with wood walls and insulation.

Re: Model a habitats
To "copy and paste" you just go to the page you want to copy, then left click on the address bar, and the address will be highlighted in blue. Then right click on COPY, and come back here and type your message. In the message box you right click to get the drop down menu, them right click on PASTE.

Re: Model a habitats
After we moved to town, in Oklahoma, Chief built a 30' X 30' pole structure & covered it with a 30' X 30' War Surplus Marine Cook Tent.
It was a dandy shop, even in the WORST of weather! Even had a wood heater, in the center. Previous to that, we once LIVED in that tent, in Arvin, California. NO HOUSES were available. Chiefs' Handyman Son
