Ford Barn Member Ages
I would be interested to know the demographics of the people who post on the Model A section of the site. I know there is a group of guys who started this great hobby that are slowing down in there work. I am 36. So am I a young Model A'er or is there a huge group of teens and early 20's getting interested in the hobby. I saw a age survey done on primarily petroliana that was very interesting. Does anyone know if any such survey has been done for this site of age of members and male vs female.

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
34 years old here. On my fourth Model A. 10 years of enjoyment driving them, breaking them, working on them, fixing them, reading about them constantly and improving them.
It's nice to have different ones based on my mood that day! I Also like Model A history during production as well as how people used them and kept them on the road through WWII.

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
Been around Model A's since I was born. Was our family car growing up. I am 61. When I was born (1950) my dad bought his first "new" car. It was a used 46 Plymouth. My mom drove that car for ever. My dad drove our "second car" the Model A (it was a 30 tudor) to work every day until maybe I was 6 or 7 years old. He was a real wheeler & dealer and probably traded it for for something else . Bottom line. There was always an A in his garage to "putz" with and he passed it on to me and now I've got a couple of them as well.

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
38 years old
Grew up with my 1930 model A as a kid. My grandmother bought it in the early 60s and then let my dad care for it from mid 70s until the 1990s. The A slept from the 1990s until last summer when my grandmother gave it to me. We have been having fun with it since then.

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
I'm 56 and have a 29 roadster and a 28 open cab pickup. I took my Washington driver's test in a 30 Tudor my older brother restored in the early 70s. The 28 pickup is on the lift where I'm installing a rebuilt engine, 39 transmission, and Mitchel overdrive. The 29 is apart and nearly ready to paid Rose Beige. Spring is here, the weather has warmed up to the 70s and I'm back in the garage after a few weeks of freezing cold weather. My 63 Corvette verte is out for paint.

I bought my first Model A in 1957 and only kept it for a year. In 1968 I bought my 28 tudor and spent 2+ years restoring it. I still have that tudor plus five other As. I'm cirrently restoring a late 31 sport coupe. I'm 68 and plan to keep working on my six Model As as long as possible. GREAT to hear from young guys just starting in the hobby.

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
69 going on 70.
Got my first A in 1957 for free, a four door 1930 Sedan and I put a real cast iron Winfield head on it. Carved 15 lbs. off of the flywheel. Tried every carb setup from twin Zeniths, 97s, 94s, Winfields etc. Over time I basically beat the car to death and sold it for dirt. Next was a 1931 Pickup in 1967 for $400. It was pink top to bottom had a dropped axle and one functioning rear brake. Fixed it a lot and repainted it, even hauled rock (2/3 of a yard). Again it got beat pretty bad and sat in my back yard for twenty plus years until I turned it into a street rod woody in 1997. Next was a 31 Tudor that cost $4000. Had it for a couple of years, to busy working for a living. Wound up trading it as part payment for a T bucket. My current A is a 1930 Tudor that I got for free (sort of) last year. Replaced the stock motor with an H&H touring motor and lost the rear main. Rebuilt and corrected their mistakes, put in a Stipe HP 350 cam, two 94s, headers and a 27 lb. flywheel, balanced it and it is b_b_b_bad to the bone. Last edited by Milton; 02-17-2011 at 10:01 PM. Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
I got into the hobby in 1961, I was 10 years old when Mom dropped me off at the Ridgefield HCCA Fall Meet. That pretty much set the course of my life, meet a lot of great people and saw great cars. I don't feel like I'm 60, but know I'll never finish the cars I have. Dad got his A around 1962 and I found the Roadster body I'm still working on a year or so later. Still have Dad's Roadster but it hasn't seen the road since 1983, no need to fight its electrical gremlins, I just like looking at it, lots of good memories.

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
I was born near the middle of the last century. I refuse to act my age even though I often feel like like I'm twice my age.
I've been wrenching on all kinds of autos trucks and tractors most of my life. I've had the privilege of working on many great makes, including many that are no longer manufactured. I have never owned a Model A but I have turned a few nuts and bolts on some. Maybe I'll own one some day, hopefully before I can't wrench any more. |

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
What a ray of sunshine for the hobby. Young people. That's anyone in their 50's or younger. All the clubs are worrying about the hobby dying out since so many of us are getting up in age. I'm especially excited to see people 30 or younger and then there is
John Duden. Fantastic!!! At 74 years coming up March 8th, does anyone know someone 148 years old so I can still call my self middle age? :>) As an old friend, now gone, used to say, "I'm going to live till I die". No giving up to a few pains. I'll hang out with you kids. What happens if something happens to me when I'm driving my Model A 2500 miles from home? Then it happens while I'm having the time of my live instead of watching TV. Richard Anaheim CA |

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
I'll hit 75 this April. Bought my first A at age 16 in 1952. She was a '31 Tudor, black with red wheels. Thirteen years ago I purchased a early '30 Sport Coupe, chicle and copra, with straw wheels. Most importantly I belong to a great and active club, the Fox Valley Region, MARC. It has been a blast these last thirteen years.

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
I am 66 and got my first Model A, a 1930 Coupe, in 1964 when I was 19. It was my first car and daily driver, and I put 30,000 miles on that car before I went in the AF in 1967. About 4 years ago, I got the bug to get another one, and this time I wanted a 4 dr and a nicely restored car, so I bought a 1930 Town Sedan that a guy had spendt 9 years restoring. It is gorgeous and very correct, but I also drive it at least 4 times a week all over S. Calif., including the 405 freeway. I have a Mitchell OD and HC head, so it is a great cruiser and I am having fun driving all over!

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
How about putting the same poll on the other sites as well?
I wonder if there would be any difference....well, this poll isn't specifically about who owns and drives a Model A...it is about all of us on the barn I guess. I wish MARC and MAFCA would have some sort of "age" poll...it would be interesting to know just how many are actually in each age group. Pluck |

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
I'm going on 64. My dad bought a 30 Sedan in 1952. My brother and I drove it to school. We had a lot of fun with it. I have been around T's also, as that is my Dad's favorite. I figure that I have four and a half years in building my 1931 Pickup. It was just a summer project, so it took me thirteen years to get it done. I would burn out then go to car shows and swap meets. This would get me started again working on it. It was a basket case when I started.

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
Got my first A as a pile of 29 CCPU parts at about late teens (in the 1950's). Still have the same A but now it is a Huckster because I messed up the body in those early years. Now almost 76 I put it together again a couple years ago and added the new huckster body.

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
The average age of the people in our hobby is getting older all the time and there may not be youngsters to carry on. People tend to want the car they admired when they were younger. My first two cars were Model A's and I am only 62. Where will my car be in 20 years? What are the kids today going to want in 2031? Think they are going to want to drive a 45mph car?
The average age of Ford Barn members is interesting but it better represents the average age of old Ford owners with computers. I bet if you could get a survey of the average age of Model A owners without limiting it to those who are computer literate we would find the vast majority in the 75 to 85 bracket. I wonder what is the average MARC member age? |

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
While it is true that Model A Owners currently tend to be an older group, the demographics will continue to change. While many Model A Owners are those who remember the Model A from their youth. There is a growing next generation of Model A Owners too. From my experience, there are three different "subgroups" of Model A Owners that covers the majority of the Model A Owners that I have met.
1. Those who remember them from their youth (the oldest group). 2. Those who are the children and grandchildren of the oldest group and grew up in the hobby or inherited the car. 3. Those who don't fit into the other two groups. I am part of the third group. I was born in 1960. I was never exposed to Model A's in my youth. My parents both lived through the Great Depression and although they did not own Model A's during my lifetime, or talk about Model A's with me, I think the influence of that time frame still got passed along to me. Another factor is how long it takes most people to develop the disposable income to be able to afford this hobby if you did not grow up in it or inherit a car. Most of those who are the youngest in the hobby probably inherited a car or grew up in the hobby. If you were not part of that group, while you may have been interested in these cars at a younger age, most probably could not afford a Model A until you were in your 40's or 50's. I was lucky enough to be able to afford one in my 30's. I am only 50 and have owned a Model A for over 15 years. There will always be someone out there to continue the hobby as the oldest generation dies off. As long as we keep exposing youth to the cars, and some sort of fuel is available, the hobby will continue to be passed down from generation to generation. |

Dad bought me my first Model A when I was 14 also. At 71 yrs. of age, I just can't stop working on Model A's and trying to encourage anyone that is interested in the hobby to get involved. Got a young lad coming up to the place this weekend, to look at aquiring a 28 pick-up that I have, for a full restoration, for him, his dad, and grandpa to work on together. Members from our local club will be constripted to help out as needed.

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
I'm 17, born and raised in the model a hobby. I've driven almost 15,000 miles in the past 2 1/2 years. My car isn't a show winner, but it get's me everywhere i need to go (most of the time). My car's name is Josephine, names after Joe York who restored the car back in the 70's. If you know my car, you know it is cursed. And if you think i'm joking, i'm not. The car has a history of "surprises" it has left for me.

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
I got my car for graduation at 26 but have not had a chance to drive her much as the car was always at dad's house. I however, was not at dad's house-usually on another coast.
I have slowly pumped money into her and she is in the process of getting a new engine this year and I will finally get to bring her to my house. Then the fun will begin with me driving her different shows and trips. And I am the youngest person in both of my clubs at 40.

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
Hagertys has identified the trend of less interest in car collecting, antique cars, et al, as threats to the continuation of our hobby (or way of life for some).
Like all endeavors, new blood is necessary to maintain an avocation. Will todays youngsters be interested in old Fords? Will it be The New Beetle, PT Cruiser, Fast and Furious Civics, or Smart Cars that they find enticing enough to hold onto and repair/restore/drive/collect/show? Will they even care? I'm trying to interest my teens in at least having a notion of how the mechanical world works. Most kids are only interested in the world of electrons splattering on the back of a sheet of plasma and being connected to the rest of the world instantly.

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
Got my one and only A (29 std coupe) in 1959 at the age of 16 and still own it. Became interested in A's when my uncle bought a dolomite mine in the Calif desert that had a couple of model T trucks that came with the mine. He told me then that A's were easier to drive so when I looked for my first car I bought an A for $175 and it had just had the engine rebuilt.

I am 64 and driving the 29 CCPU I bought in 1964. My neighbor accross the street used to give me a ride to school in it if I missed the bus.Sold it to me for $75 running and driving. My friend and I took it apart in '69 and I stored it (and moved it 4 times ) untill last year when another friend and I got it running again.Good things come to those who wait, and don't sell stuff: EVER!!!

Bought my first model A when I was 13, a 29 2 door sedan with the back cut out of it in 1958. Paid 15 dollars for it and drove it away with the aid of a push start. Have not been without one since. I am now almost 66. Bill

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
I am 59 1/2 I know this for I took the money out of my 401K to buy this 1929 Model A Truck on 1/18/11 when I turned 59 1/2 .
That was the only way for me to get this truck that lit up my eyes.. And I wanted it...Yippie..Not happy with the taxes that uncle sam steals on this money. But I made a decision that you only live once.. I had a Model A Coupe 20 some yrs ago in a partnership with ex brother in law. He decided to strip it down to frame without me..I am the one who does the work and had other projects I was building and was upset and ended up selling it. I just talked to fellow few months ago who bought it and still is apart. But I always wanted a truck and now have it.. And just Luv looking at it and can not wait for winter to end to start driving it to work few times a year. I do like this forum and really enjoy reading every day the questions and answers that are posted.. Thank You All for being here..Joe |

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
I am 52 and I bought my first model A last spring. its a 28 AR sport coupe. My wife and I love Gracie! we do all of our Sunday errends in her. We have had to do a lot to her over the course of the last year and have spent more than a restored one would have cost, but what an adventure and learning experience! We get stares, waves and comments everywhere we go! I just installed a new balanced touring engine and plan to start taking some road trips when we get her broke in. There is nothing more relaxing than a ride in an A. Great mental therapy!

I am 69 years young. Got my first A in 1970 and still have her, A 28 CC Pickup. The Model A hobby has been a great adventure and I hope it continues.
The pretty one under the speedster is Elizabeth, my grandaughter. She is 13 and learning what is required in building and maintaining her 28 Speedster. In the pix she is learning the fine art of sheet metal installation. In our current phase of rebuilding she is learning the fine art of sanding prior to a new paint job. She loves sanding - he-he. |

Interesting to look at... If you click on one of the numbers in the results of each age in the poll above, it gives a break down by name.
See the breakdown here. --> http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/poll.p...ults&pollid=20

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
Seeing that the largest category of Model A enthusiasts are ages 60-69, what does that tell you about the future of this hobby? Perhaps interest by the younger generation will be virtually non existent in a decade or so. What will become of all those "old cars", old parts, and suppliers. ?

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
Second generation Model "A" owner. Parents had an "AA" truck and coupe. Mom bought the coupe for $85. She could hand crank the coupe when the Bendix spring was broke. My dad always said,"they are going to make these again some day". He was kind of right when the Shay was manufactured. He would probably have been disappointed in the Shay. I always enjoyed being with my dad when he was working on the Model A's.

I think comfort on the computer plays a lot into the fact that no one who is 90 has raised their hand on this internet survey.

I am 79, will be 80 in April. Bought my "A" in 1975. Am a member of both National clubs for 36 years now, and belong to 2 local clubs, one MAFCA and one MARC. Restored my car and entered it at the MAFCA 1982 meet in Minneapolis MN and took a first place. Drive it in the summer and test carburetors that I restore.

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
After working all summer I purchased my 28 Roadster from a neighbor in 1942; cars were hard to get, had to pay $ 50.00 for it. I was 14 at the time. Painted the roadster Powder Blue using a vaccume cleaner spray gun. Sold the Roadster in 1944 for $500.00 .
In 1962 I finally got another A, 1931 Deluxe Coupe. Joined a local club, Capitol A's in Sacramento, and MAFCA. Havn't been without an "A" since, and usually had more than one. Currently have a 1929 Roadster, 1930 Deluxe Coupe, and A1276 under restoration. Have also been a member of MARC for a lot of years. This has been a wonderful hobby and the best part are the people I have met over the years; A'ers seem to always have time to give a helping hand. I believe this hobby has kept me young and my mind active and when I depart from this earth I hope I have just parked my A in the garage after a long drive. Ron |

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
Just turned 61 years young on the 18th of Feb. Bought a 1930 standard coupe and presently have the engine out to repair a rear main oil leak. This was a re-built engine and upon first firing it up the engine had the wrong dipper tray and boy was it a bad sound. Installed the correct dipper tray and ran it again. Removed the engine and started on a test stand for 15 or 20 minutes and it sounded great with no oil leaks.
Installed back in the car and drove it around my industrial district for 4 miles. Stopped to garage it and saw a Valdeze sized oil leaks at the main area. Pulled engine last summer and haven't had time to correct it yet. Anyone in Tulsa that is willing to help get the ol' girl back on the road? Just wishful thinking me bets. |

Re: Ford Barn Member Ages
Chronological age 72. Mental age yet to be determined.
My 1931 Briggs SW Sedan was purchased by my Grandfather in 1933 from its original owner. Car was used for family transportation and mostly as a shop car around my Grandfather's garage. He gave me the car in 1954 when I was 15. Drove the sedan for the next three years while in high school. Car was painted, new interior, and chrome in 1957. Our family also had 5 other Model A Fords from around 1957 until 2002. Drove a low mileage 1930 coupe during college. My brother kept the 1931 AA fire truck. During International Ford Day this past year we had an 80th birthday party for the Sedan. Had a cake, baloons, and party hats. After 78 years the SW Sedan is part of the family. |

I'm 48 years young, Feel like I'm 90, and still trying to get over turning 30.
Got my first model A when I was 47 in 2010. I have been wanting one since I was 20 yrs old but never did it. I wonder why I wasted so much time. This is one of the most enjoyable restorations I have done. By the way, trying to sneek a model A down the driveway past the Mrs is much harder to do than antique bikes. Just for the record.

I got my first A this past July, mostly as an excuse to spend time with my father. In many ways, the car is more his than mine. He's 82 and hasn't owned one since the '50s.
