Default Rebuilt transmission sources

I am having my engine rebuilt and while I was at it I pulled the trans and stripped it down. It is toast.
Mitchell only does synchronized transmissions. I have had good luck with Bratton's and Snyder's on other items and they do stock rebuilds. Anybody had any experience with buying a transmission from any vendors?

One of the vendors was offering "new" ones I thought.

I bought a real nice one off of E Bay for about $350.

Yea, how about the new Chinese one for $650? Rebuilds are expensive, priced a cluster gear lately? Mac's rebuild kit is $655!

The transmission is pretty easy to rebuild. The gears sold my most of the dealers are USA made, we just finished a follow up report on the transmission in the Model A Times sedan, it is 100% reproduction parts except the housing and shift tower. But everything is working well, no noise. The report is in the Winter 2011 issue which will be in the mail Monday I understand.

I suggest you talk to or at least look at the catalog for "mikes affordable" as they have been working about 4 years on transmission development both stock, higher gears and synchronized

Rob, are these the transmissions that are being manufactured in India? If so, I received one the of the first 10 that were sent to the US to be evaluated. Some may recall that on the old Fordbarm I did a complete pictorial and write-up on what we experienced.

When I was restoring my 28 tudor back in the early 70s I bought all the transmission gears, shafts and bearings from Vintage Auto Parts in Santa Ana Ca. for $80.00. Wow! Times have changed.

BRENT: Could you do a short synopsys(sp) on what you found/encountered with that transmission? Thanks in advance. Always appreciate your posts.

This post is on the Model A Swap Meet Section. I don't know anything about the transmissions, just thought you may want to check it out.

Bob

I have two Model A transmissions, rebuilt with new bearings, seals.
The gears are used but in good shape.

Asking $250 each plus shipping.
Located in Cleveland, Ohio

Brent as I remember it was Poland. Definitely Eastern Europe. I met a guy at the meet in Williamsburg, VA in 2008 that had one of the first 25 shipped in and was very happy with it. He was from North Carolina and knew you. Back then I also talked to Mike’s in Georgia about his development program and I remember Europe also.

I also remember a problem with four transmmisions that were shipped state side with with one bearing that was too thick.

I just looked up the article on the “Model A Times” summer 2008 that says Europe as well.

When I was still at the plant we were trying to buy castings from India and China with mixed results. Also bearings from China with mixed results and Eastern Europe through our German facilities with good luck.

I sense the rebuilding of transmissions with USA bearings is successful and you would know that one.

The transmissions with 15% more in 1st and 2nd may have appeal with some of the Model A folks. And synchronized would appeal too many but the cost is a big hit.

For those who may be interested I would call Mike and get the answers first hand.

Also I think John LaVoy plans to or has tried one of the transmissions in their project car.

I missed the above post from John LaVoy. We will have a good idea of the quality of the reproduction trans in the new Model A Times within a few weeks.

I thank everyone for the response(s). A lot of good info was posted and I was lucky enough to get some help close to home but the info from the postings helped me to at least sound like I knew what I was talking about. This is a great forum.
