Re: Gas tank fill filter????
Besides the 'Fire Arrestor' use, I use my 'Filter Screen' to aid the tank baffles in their anti-sloshing of the gasoline on quick turns, when the tank is full. Yes, it is a little hassle to pull it out every time I fill up, but as I fill up only once every a month, I find it a useful part of the original gas tank engineering and have left it in place, as intended by the manufacturer.
I have found that the PVC 'Filler Riser' does work to help get a maximum amount of fuel into the tank with minimum hassle. I need two specific sizes: the '28-'29 tank is different than the '30-'31 tank. And size matters. |

Re: Gas tank fill filter????
If you're PARANOID about static electricity, I wonder if those ground straps that drag under the car are still available???

Re: Gas tank fill filter????
Always wondered about those things as a kid. Why do you need to have a rubber strap dragging on the ground when you got 4 rubber tires on the ground ?

Those straps have metal threads in them. Originally designed to get rid of STATIC electricity from NYLON seat covers, those zaps would cringe your BUTT & bulge your EYEBALLS Bill Shocking

Mine does not have one. Every time I try to fill a friend's car that has one, I feel the #@*% words coming out.

Re: Gas tank fill filter????
if you look closely alot of fuel tankers have a strap that drags on the ground still.

Re: Gas tank fill filter????
In the time frame when the Model A was new gas pumps were more primitive and not all had their hoses grounded. As to the subject of filling your tank I can fill easily at most gas stations in my area as most have vapor recovery nozzles. In particular I have yet to find a Mobil station where I can not fill easily. There is one Gulf station in my area where it clicks off after just a bit of gas. I avoid that station.;

Re: Gas tank fill filter????
Just to clarify things a bit, there is a difference between a "spark arrester", which the Model A DOES NOT have, and a "Flame arrester" which is the function of the heavy perf'ed metal fill tube.
The body of any vehicle (or aircraft) can develop a static potential relative to ground. Even if the fuel hose and nozzle have their own embedded ground you can still get a spark. The safe procedure is to touch the nozzle to the metal of the vehicle before removing the filler cap. Metal to metal contact must be maintained while filling. Use of any non-conductive filler extension is not a safe procedure. Flame arrestor: This is actually a heat sink. The metal must have sufficient mass and small enough holes so that any flame (burning mix of fuel and air) will be cooled to below the sustained self-ignition temperature before it can pass all the way through the holes. Vapor external to the tank ignited by a static spark cannot pass a flame front through the flame arrestor to the vapor inside the tank. Motorcycles and other small tanks: If the tank volume is small and the filler opening large any ignition of the internal vapor will simply produce a scary 'pop' without damage to the tank because the pressure never reaches the tank burst point. In a larger tank ignited vapors will produce a pressure that cannot vent fast enough through the filler to prevent catastrophic tank rupture. A full tank is very safe, not much vapor volume. An empty tank (full of vapor/air mix) is dangerous! Modern cars: Most all have a small metal spring flap just inside the hole that only fits the evil E10 nozzle. When that flap is closed you have an effective flame arrestor. When you insert the nozzle, it first touches the filler tube metal thus grounding the vehicle to the nozzle. The nozzle then pushes the flap open as you seat it into position. Only then do you start the flow. I'll keep my stock Henry flame arrestors in position. |

Re: Gas tank fill filter????
It arrived today, installed it for fit, it fits loose, is this normal? I have a 31 and bought a 30-31 neck extension.

Re: Gas tank fill filter????
It won't lock, it will turn to the notches but it's loose to fit.

Re: Gas tank fill filter????
Yes, tight fit is defeating it's purpose is the words from Andrew Jackman. Always good to be sure. Just called him. Now next trip out, I'll get to test it and have one more frustration leave me......I don't have many.
