Dump thing I did (not Model A)
I have to admit doing something very stupid, as a UNIX/Linux computer Engineer for over 20 years I always said to kids (keep drinks away from computers). Well last Thursday, I did not walk my talk and spilled my coffee on my 2 year old 15" Apple Macbook... Apple wanted $1,240 to fix my ~$2k laptop... I figured I'd see what I could do... I ordered some tools from https://www.ifixit.com and took the unit apart... Not seeing a lot of coffee I tried a few things and let the unit dry for a few days... Like removing and old Model A head, patients... well. I did a reset of it and dang thing fired up.... Suffice to say, thanks be to God as I cannot fully understand what I did..

That's a great story. It reinforces the patience concept of fixing things.

Re: Dump thing I did (not Model A)
My son-in-law is a computer nerd. He recently saved a broken down laptop that was about to be junked by heating the printed circuit boards in the oven. The theory was that over time the solder that comprises the circuits cracks and causes the malfunction. Heating to a specified temperature allows the solder to soften and rejoin to itself. It worked. Who woulda thunk it?

"Mind your p's and q's" comes from the time when type was set by hand. In type, the letters look the same except the typesetter has to think about each being backwards to the other.

Re: Dump thing I did (not Model A)
I bought a 50" TV for the bedroom and after 1 year, Setting there watching it one evening the screen went black and had no sound. Out of warranty of course so I got on the web and searched for my problem. Found a guy says send me 16 bucks and he would send instructions and capacitors to fix it. I sent the money and a couple days later a package arrived and sure enough he came through.
After a bazillion screws and the TV laid face down on the bed I looked for bulged capacitors as instructed. Being a plumber I felt no angst about tearing into my "new" TV as I didn't want to buy another one or take to a shop to fix it. I think I replaced about four and had like eleven left over for future use and decided it was time to try it out. So back together it went and set it back up on the stand and wow, it worked! Felt like a genius. Ha! |

Spilled cola on my laptop keyboard. It still worked but keys stuck. I turned it upside down and sprayed WD40 on it. Worked another three years.

Ever hear the about the lady who called her hubby to tel him the windows wouldn't open.
Honey, he said, calmly, pour some luke warm water over them and it should be OK. 10 minutes later she calls back to tell him 'the computer is now really stuffed' Cheers Chris Cape Town

Re: Dump thing I did (not Model A)
We had a radar set in the Navy that the air intake for the room was near the stack. Sucked in air with stack smoke and a LOT of carbon. Unit would quit. Washed the boards with distilled water and detergent. Let dry and would work again. Carbon and high voltage do not mix. Later they redesigned the air handling, put in air conditioner and changed to traveling wave tube. No more problems. Had multiple UHF transceivers that again had cooling air for the room that was contaminated with stack gases. Had to polish the inside of the transceivers and clean with alcohol to get to work.

Re: Dump thing I did (not Model A)
I spilled water on my 1 y.o. Lenovo laptop keyboard. 8 of the number keys do not work. I tried to dry it out, I took it apart. No dice. I took it to a computer shop, the keyboard they bought didn't work. It was my work computer, so my company will replace. FYI, I had had the motherboard replaced twice and the screen once at a year old. Thinkpads are not what they used to be.
