Generator for 1931 Non-indented
My '31 coupe (non-indented firewall) has an alternator. I would like to correct this situation. I have three generators in my possession. I plan on taking one apart, create a set of drawings and replace the alternator. After consulting the RG & JS, I am still unsure if any of these are correct.
Thanks for the help, Paul

Re: Generator for 1931 Non-indented
It is may be just an optical illusion but the center one looks like it is a smaller diameter. If it is smaller it is probably a '32. What do the back ends look like? The location of the output stud is import and but I would have to read the judging standards to find out the significance. Remember as they were rebuilt over the years a lot of parts were mixed.

30-31 generator has a 1/2 inch taper short nose shaft with rear bushing.

From what I can see in the pics, the center generatror looks correct to me. The terminal is on the correct end .

March of 1930 and later used the bushing in the rear and had the output stud moved to the rear, as well as the short taper pulley. |

Thanks for all the responses so far. Seems like the consensus is the middle one, just in case here is a picture of the backs. Same order.

Re: Generator for 1931 Non-indented
The left one with the beveled edge and cooling holes is post Model A production. The middle one is correct for March 1930 to the end of 1931, and the one on the right is the transistion generator for early 1930, like about March, when the change was made to a rear bushing and short taper. You have the rear bushing and long taper, and these don't show up too often.
All 3 have the rear bushing. BTW, the lock washers belong under the screw heads at the rear of the generator, so the nuts have more clearance to the pulley edge. The one on the right needs to be switched around. I just looked at the first picture again, and someone has mixed and matched on the right one in this last picture (bad). That front end plate is for the PIN alignment of the earlier case, so when it's used on the main body meant for the UPSET end plate (as shown in the center), there is nothing to lock it in place. OK, I just looked again at the first picture and see more mix and match. That generator has the early body as shown by the forward output stud, but has the post Model A end plate with cooling holes. You're lucky you have one correct generator. Now, lets hope it works. Last edited by Tom Wesenberg; 01-03-2015 at 04:37 PM. |

Re: Generator for 1931 Non-indented
I can't believe the knowledge people on this site-the discussion about which generator was used on which dates is impressive.
