Default '38 u-joint belleville washer

On a '38 u-joint to trans(stock 3spd top loader), should it be attached with:

1)bolt/split lock washer/belleville washer to trans main shaft

Or

2)bolt/belleville to trans main shaft

And what is the torque spec?

I don’t think that there is a Bellville washer in there!just a heavy flat washer some times with a dimple to line up with a spline on the u/joint.use a heavy duty spring washer and torque 30 ft lbs

We use a heavy FLAT washer that is 3/16" thick, and then a normal split (lock) washer. I like that 25 or 30 ft. lbs. that Lawrie talks about. And thanks to Mac VanPelt, you can see in his drawing that Ford used a thick, flat washer and a split lock washer. DD

The thick washer, as stock has a slight bell to it, and should be mounted one way to give a belleville effect. That's my understanding. I use the thick washer, convex side out, a spring washer and the standard bolt.

I agree with Mart but would add that the original lock washer was the shake proof variety having striations radiating out from the center. You'll notice the marks they leave on the original thick convex washers

You're welcome!

Those marks on the convex washer are also a big clue as to which side of the washer was 'out' and which was 'in'.

Thanks guys. The only pictures I could find in old threads was of the reproduction thick washer with the dimple as Lawrie specified, and a spring/split lock washer. The only pic I could find with the stock belleville washer did not have a spring/ split lock washer as well.

When I pulled mine apart it had the stock belleville washer and stock spring/split lock washer. Just wanted to confirm I'm putting this back together correctly.

To funny V8COOPMAN, I have that picture in my book but never thought to zoom right in, you can clearly see the setup.
