Default Syncro silent T98 transmission 48 to 52 truck

The 48 to 52 T98 synrco silent 4 speed. Is it the same as the 4 speed used behind Y block ford big trucks 1954 and up? Also the 1953 truck 4 speed, was it a T98 or did they still use both spure gear 4 speeds and the T98?

HI; I have a original '72 came with a T-98 optional as the floor pan uses a 2" higher bump. T-98's are common and preferred by some 4x4 racers. Syncros very good 2,3,and 4th . Newc

48-52 t98s used a different bearing retainer and input shaft than the later ones, if i have my facts straight. Also the bolt pattern is different. IHC used this transmission as well.

According to Novak, t98s were not used after 1964 in fords. The t18s were and for a few years the t18s used t98 covers

T98s are common, but 48-52 versions, not so much.

Also used in Towmotor, Hyster, and other material handling equipment. Often with a forward and reverse box.

As noted above the 48-52 transmission uses a different case than the 53 and later transmissions. The fragile part of this transmission is the rear bearing retainer / mount which likes to crack. I found a transmission out of a Ditch Witch trencher that is identical in the case and gears to the 48-52 transmission. I had to find a Ford rear bearing retainer / mount.

To further confuse things in 1956 or so the gear teeth direction was reversed.
