Can you ID Part out of my Tranny?

I have a 34 Fordor that I got last year. It has a 59AB engine. This year I am updating all my lubricants and drained the tranny to refill. The enclosed part came out with the old oil. It's 1/4" dia and 17/32" long. From the wear and spalling on the surface, it looks like a cylindrical roller out of a roller bearing. It is rounded more on one end than the other - looks like from wear. I guess it could be a pin but doesn't have any axial marks on it. Can anyone tell me what it is and where it came from? The transmission seems to work OK. I guess it could have been sitting in the bottom for years. Do I have a problem coming up?

Could it be a gearstick locating pin? Maybe someone dislodged it and it fell in, and they just fitted another one, or improvised with a piece cut from a drill.

It locates in the slot on one side of the ball on the shifter.

OK. The shift lever pin would be a good explanation. There is no roller bearing in there -is there?

Is it open at one end and closed at the other? It might be a detent pin from the shifter. Does one of the shift forks move easily without "snapping" into place?

This is the shifter index pin - probably fell in and somebody put in a 'new' one. There are no roller bearings in that transmission that are anywhere near this size . . . and the ones that are in there are 'caged'.

And...this means your trans dodged a bullet. Those can get in between gears if "lost" and replaced, resulting in a memorably bad day.

The shifting into all gears works OK. Yes it is 1/4" dia by 1/2" long - so it sounds like it is the gear shift pin - which must have been replaced somewhere along the way after it came out. I didn't think there were any roller bearings in there like that.

When you pull the shifter from the trans, the little pin just sits there. If you forget to put it somewhere safe, it's easy to accidently knock it and let it fall in.

alanwoodieman, I haven't been into the thing, so I don't know what it looks like. Is that the pin holding the shift lever into the transmission you are showing?

the pin is sticking into the lever on the right, not really attached, if you look at the top of the slot you will see a good amount of wear, if your shifter looks like that it needs to be repaired by welding and cutting the slot back to original 1/4" width
