Default Large oil pan plug

What's the reason for the large oil pan plug on an ev-8? Is the plug designed for an 'inner" or "outer" box wrench?

To drain the oil. (The devil made me do it.)

Believe it was to help remove sludge when oil filters were the exception, rather than the rule.

I don't like the big style plug. I find when im draining the oil it comes out far too quickly when you remove the plug and the can ive got to catch the oil gets overwhelmed with the volume of oil that comes out and the oil ends up all over the floor.

Was perhaps the idea that with a large hole in the bottom of the pan you could run a brush around the oil intake filter and clean it off? Is is that a really STUPID idea?

My 226 and some V8's had the big plug and a clean out. I just drained my oil tonight and you are right about oil coming out fast, real fast. Better have the drain pan in the right spot! LOL

alan the pan holds about 2 gallons but it closed like the one below. its not a good design to use with a flathead with a big drain plug.

When I was in High School in 1950 I worked in a Service Station. when we drained the oil we would removed as much of the sluge we could through the drain hole. Belive we had a special wrench.

I use an Apco-Mossberg #748 wrench; they occasionally show up on eBay.

I disliked the large plug in my truck so much I welded a bung in the middle of it that uses a modern oil plug with O ring.

This is getting to be an interesting thread! Henry always seemed to be messing with the production of plugs: Cast verses stamped. Steering oil plug: stamped steel or cast...
I'm guessing factors in the decision included amount of small scrap pieces Henry had to use, subcontractor issues; extra casting schedule option. Who knows.

I thunk I had thing figured today. I have Ford Model T thick sheet metal wrench #1349. It has a large opening for a big nut on one end. Nope not big enough. Packard had a b ox end wrench for mid sizes nuts and the outer edges of the wrench were also shaped to use a an inside wrench used on hub caps and crank opening. I wonder if henry offered a bigger wrench for the large pan nut?

I use a 2 inch open end wrench on that drain plug to drain the oil and a large drain pan to try to cut down on the mess.

I like this idea. One could still pull the big plug at the end and clean around the pickup. With our modern oils I never see sludge in my engines. The ancient engines I still dismantle now and then contain some serious sludge..

Back then, every station had a pressed steel wrench with several hex & square sizes on it, including the big FORD size.
