Four Months Hard Labor for Manslaughter

George Harris Hendasyde, and Edinburgh engineer, was sentenced to four months hard labor at the Hucks Assisses on Saturday for the manslaughter of Mary Harnes at Colabrook, by negligently driving a motor-car.

For the prosecution it was stated that Mrs Harnes was wheeling a child in a mailcart along High-street, Colnbrock, on Sunday afternoon, April 2. She was with friends, who were walking on the sidepath while she pushed the cart in the road. which is twelve feet wide at that point.

A motor-car approached at ten miles an hour, and when close to the woman the driver turned round to lower the hood of the car to protect him from the rain. As he did so he changed hands on the guiding wheel and caused the car to swerve and run into the woman.

The mailcart was overturned, and, though the child was uninjured, the woman was killed on the spot.

Hendasyde denied that he was lowering the hood, and stated that he sounded the hooter when fifteen yards from the woman. In cross-examination he admitted that he was on the wrong side of the road because there were pedestrians onthe left side.

Mr. Justice Lawrence said that motorists must not think that when they sounded hooters pedestrians must get out of the way. Pedestrians had every right to use the roads, though, if they crossed just in front of vehicles, they did so at their own risk.

It's actually Bucks, not Hucks, Assises, short for Buckinghamshire. I used to live not far from Colnbrook, a fine old village which once had several coaching inns, being at the right point west of London for a change of horses. Now right under the flightpath of London Heathrow airport, and the main A4 road to the West now bypasses it.

Not the first death in the UK, that was Bridget Driscoll in 1896. In her case, the driver said his car was not capable of more than 4mph, but a witness said he had tuned it up to do 8mph. The coroner hoped said he hoped "such a thing would never happen again." The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents estimate 550,000 people had been killed on UK roads by 2010.
