Default 31 front brake rods

so this being my first time bulding and A , I need to know how the front brake rods go on as in is the round eye end supposed to go through the anti rattle part ? mine will not but there is a slot on the anti rattler that looks like it should work that way. the rattler pushes the brake rod towards the wheel correct?
also the book shows 51 1/2" but the rods set to that length are 1/2' to short to work

All 4 threaded ends of the brake rods face forward. If you use repro brake rods, then you may have to grind the eye some to make it fit through the spring slot for the front rods.

If you are referring to the measurement Les Andrews list in his red book. It is not correct. This error has been pointed out many times here. For safety make sure you have a minimum thread engagment length equivalent to the diameter of the rod in the clevis.

Set the front and rear axles on jack stands, then tighten the adjuster until the wheel locks up, then back off the adjuster until the wheel spins with just the slightest drag. Then lightly pull the brake lever to the ON position to remove the freeplay and lightly pull the brake rod towards the OFF position. Adjust the brake rod so the pin just slips in place. Do the same for each of the 4 wheels, and pay no attention to what the length is.

The complete brake procedure is in the SERVICE BULLETINS.
