Default paint or clear coat

The chrome on the grill is peeling bad but do not have the resources to re-chrome. Was thinking of either painting or clear coating (kind of like the rough/shiny look of it). I have half wire brushed for a before and after, any thoughts??? If I paint is there a suggested way to get the rest of the chrome off or smoothed?

Before and after.... Hammerite silver. The missing bottom grille bars I made from 1/2" copper pipe cut in half. The hammerite gave a sort of rough texture which hid the sanded down peeling chrome.

That '39 truck grille should have been painted, if your wanting the authentic original look.

My grille was chrome from the factory, as was the windshield frame. It was a dealers show truck. The color was black cab with chrome yellow fenders and wheels and a double yellow pinstripe on the beltline. James Wagner mentions this variant in FTS'05. Since it wasn't a show truck, feathering in the peeling chrome with a disc sander produced reasonable results. I think the heavy coat of hammerite sort of glued down the remaining chrome shreds. This tonner was given to the Friday Harbor Wa. Airport by Ernie Kansler who is/was Edsel Ford's grandson. Always wondered on the history before him. But that's a different thread someday. This truck is somewhere in NY state today......Now go rough up that peeling grille and get some paint on it!

Dechrome it and have it powder coated silver with a clear coat if you like the chrome look.
Many new car and SUV aluminum wheels are done this way.
