Default Installing Rear Drum

I am trying to install the rear brake drum after replacing the emergency brake band. The service brakes haven't been touched and are broken in. I have gotten the drum about 25% over the service brake shoes and the axle shaft is flush with the end of the drum. I can turn the drum but it doesn't seem to be going over the emergency brake band. I have disconnected the emergency brake rod from the lever in the car and the emergency brake shoes are seated solidly against the carrier. They could not be retracted any further. How do you get the drum installed? Ed

Could be a couple of things depending on what you are replacing. I have recently seen lining that was bonded to the brake band to thick for some drums. There is a inside and outside to the way the band is installed on the carrier. Your metal band should fit tight against the carrier. Make sure you pins and toggle links are installed properly. The inside measurement of the ebrake surface of the drum should be 9.630” in diameter.

Emergency bands have a inner and outer side. Check and see if the band is level on the carrier or from the side, check and see if the band is even all the way around the carrier. The exposed part of the carrier should be the same. If the band is on backwards, then it will be on an angle. Thickness of the material would be the other issue.
