Wanted: Ford transmission expert

I have two transmission questions regarding parts used in these transmissions.


1. Is there a difference between the 022a-7113 and 21c-7113 cluster gears? Why are there different part numbers if they are interchangeable?


2. Is there any difference between the 01a-7100 and 21c-7100 low rev slider gears? They appear identical but??

I have couple of transmission parts/rebuild books by MAC VANPELT.

You will find everything in the books and more to answer/direct you when messing/rebuilding 3 speed top loader Ford transmissions.

Larry, I've looked at both the 01C-7100 ans 21C-7100 low gears and see no difference except the 21C sometimes has a small groove in the outer diameter of the flange. I have not compared both of the cluster gears.

I believe the only functional difference is in the thrust bushing design used between the cluster gear and the rear of the case.

The 21C items were some sort of experimental variation on those gears. The print specs referred to a different heat treatment (and perhaps a little different alloy - I can’t remember) than the regular Ford specs. They stopped listing those for sale a few years after the war. Regardless of a possible difference in the rear thrust washers, you can consider them interchangeable.

If all this is true why would they use the 21C part numbers which are for a 1942 Commercial vehicle? Also the Green Bible lists them with different matching gears and related parts. Thanks for your reply.
