Rear Main Janitor
I just received my "Rear Main Janitor" from Mac's. I thought it was a simple clip on. I can not find any bolts that this will fit on. What am I missing? No instructions were included.

I have no idea. Did you contact Mac's? They sell it, they should be able to explain it!

Re: Rear Main Janitor
The ones I have seen use the bottom two bolts that connect the clutch housing (bellhousing) and bottom one of the three flywheel housing inspection plate bolts. The problem I have always seen is as soon as they get full of oil, then they leak again. They are a pain to empty as you can imagine. I am more of an advocate of correcting the initial problem but since you asked, that is how they connect.

Re: Rear Main Janitor
I have used them but like you suggest its better to solve the leak. Never had any problem emptying them as never needed to. I just assumed the oil blew out as I drove alone -Karl

Re: Rear Main Janitor
I cut some absorbant sheets that just fit inside the janitor. Easy to change those out.

Re: Rear Main Janitor
They fit exactly as Brent says. I put them on my customers cars when they are afraid of drips on the garage floor. They rarely need emptying.

Re: Rear Main Janitor
Tomorrow I will put the car up on the hoist, and see if I have any better luck. The hole for the flywheel cover will not reach the bolt, because the handle hits the oil pan,and the rear two holes hit the radius rod before reaching the bolts. I was planning on a petcock and hose tied to the running board bracket. A friend of mine is using that set up,(have not seen his car).

Re: Rear Main Janitor
I got one (from Snyder's) because of a pretty serious leak, but then got a new oil cap and the pretty serious leak went away. I still see a few drips now and then, however, so I will probably put it back on. They are a little tricky to install and messy to empty, although I'm assuming mine won't have much in it in the future! The absorbent liner is a good idea.

Re: Rear Main Janitor
Just resurrecting this thread from 2012 as I was removing a Janitor from my car today - judging the posts above - I assume that many Janitor users do run the car with the device clipped on, and don't just use it when the A is stored in the garage.
I assumed that it was OK to use it when road driving and it hasn't fallen off! My rear crank leak is minimal now that I've learnt not to fill up with oil to the F mark on the dipstick. People get very fussy about their driveways so the Janitor avoids those embarrassing tell-tale spots after you drive off. The photo just about shows the neoprene strips (hatch seal) that I use on the Janitor. This prevents rattles and seems to make it more secure under the car. |

Re: Rear Main Janitor
I have also cut absorbant pads to fit the inside of mine. Makes cleanup much easier in that I don't have to take the janitor off to clean it, just change the "diaper".

Re: Rear Main Janitor
I recall once checking out a ratty old "A" that was for sale. The owner had attached a tuna can under the flywheel housing drip hole with wires secured to the frame rails. His explanation was that it caught the drips when the car was parked and the windage under speed caused the can to tilt downward enough so as to dribble the oil on the roadway. That was when they still oiled the roads and before the EPA. Not sure that would go over nowadays!
