Default 1940 heater hose bib install questions

I am rebuilding the cooling system on my 40; replacing both water pumps, upper and lower hoses, thermostats etc.. The car's old lower right radiator hose has a "hose bib" installed into it which allows the coolant to pass thru the heater, then back into drivers head.

What/how have you found the best way to put a hole into/install the new bib into the radiator hose?

And once I've got the 'hole' in the new hose, should I use some type of sealant on the bib as insurance?

As always, thanks in advance.

I used a large hole punch that left a tight fit around the pipe part of the hose bib. I would get a new "hose bib" instead of using a cleaned up rusty old one. I used no sealant when installing mine and it has been leak free for 3+ years.

I agree with Deuce for the most part. Like him, I use a smaller hole punch than required. As I recall, I use a 5/8' punch. I place a piece of bar stock within the hose to back it up while punching the hole out.

Unlike Deuce, I coat the fitting on both sides with Indian head Gasket Shellac. That stuff has been around for decades and works wonderfully on rubber / coolant connections.
I always coat the inside of radiator hoses prior to installing them too.

Kube: would you tell me more about "coat the inside of radiator hoses" ?

Not trying to short circuit "Kube", but all you do is swab the ID of the hose that fits over the radiator and water pump outlets and inlets. Then slide it on and clamp in place.
It comes with an applicator.

I have used Indian Head since 1964 good stuff, my local NAPA sells it.
