Default Hanger Nut Torque for Rear Spring U-Bolts

Does anyone have a torque value for the hanger nuts that hold the rear spring onto the rear cross member? I know they have cotter pins, but I want to get them tight enough before adding the cotter pins.

40 ft lbs seems pretty tight to me. Is that enough?

If they are 1/2-20 grade 5, the std torque spec is 85# dry.

I don't think that is a place for an arbitrary torque value according to the bolt size. You have to tighten them and make sure the clamp is evenly flat on the spring, and the ears are somewhat evenly distanced from the crossmember flanges.Just blindly using a torque value will leave you with the clamp too tight on one side or the other. It is not like clamping two pieces of iron together with a bolt and nut, there is springiness in those clamps.

the original nuts were hardened, they should be good and tight.
if replacing the nuts they should be at least grade 8
From the looks of the red rust dust the spring needs lubricated and the u bolts have been too loose
