Default Anyone using AMPCO top oiler?

I bought one of those AMPCO top oilers to install under the hood as an interesting option, so mostly just for looks. But, being as how all of the plumbing will be there, I might actually try to use it occasionally with maybe MMO or Seafoam. Anyone use these on their flatmotor? If so, please share your thoughts and recommendations. Thanks.

I installed one on each of our '39's, the Ford CS and the Lincoln Zephyr. The top oiler makes a difference in the smoothness (for lack of a better term) of the engine. I use MMO in them and, I would recommend them.

Cool, thanks Vic. I have two base plates for the 2x2 set up. Are you using yours with any multi-carb set ups? Also, if you are not using the oiler, does closing the valve completely close off the vacuum loss? Thanks for the response.

I have one on my '35 and '36. I like them for a couple of reasons. First, they do seem to quiet the engine down and generally makes things smoother. The second reason is the attention they get. A while back I was at a car show which placed my '35 next to an over-chromed Chevy with a 350 engine. Result, the crowd constantly collected around my '35 trying to figure out what the "red stuff" in the jar was for! The poor Chevy owner spent most of his time sitting in his lawn chair playing the role of the lonely Maytag repairman! Gotta love it!

In another car show I saw an oiler setup on a flathead. The reservoir jar had a label reading "Viagra."

I have not installed one on a multi carb set up as yet; I may put one on our '47 Convertible, running two Holly's... I'm not sure about shutting off the vacuum completely with the adjustment on the top of the oiler... you might want to plug the line if you don't plan on using it however, if you are going through the trouble of installing the unit, you might as well use it and get all the benefits.

I plan to use the NOS Allstate (complete with instructions printed in 1952) in the picture. I have a NOS Ampco install kit as well. It will go on my 1952 Marmon Herrington Ford...someday! The White oiler is NOS. The two on the left date from the 30s. I rechromated the die cast tops to freshen them up. Not pictured is a NOS Shaler.

Steve, I went to their website. They claim these are NOS being sold. What did you think about the oiler you bought from them? NOS or reproduction?

This guy found a bunch these in a warehouse. I bought a dozen of them from him before he decided what to do with them. They are not an ornament, with MMO in them they lubricate the valves and rings. Without MMO the valves will stick slightly with this new gas. I would say from the number of companies that made oils they had sticky valve problems when these cars were new. G.M.

I have one on our 46. Nice. Now, they will lubricate only the valves wheras if you add it to your gas tank it will not only lube/clean the valves but also the whole fuel line and carb. The problem is that I forget sometimes when gassing up to add it. I still add MMO to the gas when I remember. There was a rumor a few years ago that GM even added it to his corn flakes in the morning.

The discussion here has definitely convinced me to make the thing serviceable. But now that brings up some new questions. I was at the store looking for some fittings for the copper tubing that comes with the kit, just like the one around the Allstate Vaporizer pictured above. I measured the tubing and it looks like it is just under 1/4", about .20". Is that some weird tubing size?

Also, I like FlatheadFan's idea on driving the other car owners batty with folks giving the vaporizer's fluid the eye at shows. But, I have an inherent fear of that glass jar getting broken. It seemed to me that the jar threads might be the same size as the screw on cans used on old style paint guns. I thought I had one to check this out but I can't find a thing since I cleaned up my garage. Does anyone have an old spray gun around to check this out for me. I kind of like the idea of using the shiny spray can with the AMPCO decal on it.

Mike, out of the box they are meant to install on the firewall or inner fender. I got the bright idea to mount mine off of the head like a stock oil filter. In fact, I am looking for it to be symmetrical with the filter. After I get it all together I will post a pic.

A top oiler is the perfect addition for a flathed engine. Use MMO, your engine will thank you.

GM, very cool label. I think that glass jar is purposely made tough to hold up. In the interest of just something different, I am thinking about the paint gun can idea. If I find it fits, I may have to steal your label for it.

For those looking for one, look on the 'bay for "top oiler", "engine oil vaporizer", etc. I saw one with a starting bid of only $9.99. Also, check out the long distance AMPCO can. That would be cool for someone who had a COE or big commercial vehicle, I think.

Kind of pricey, but here is a metal cannister.

A metal MMO oiler. New stickers and rebuild kits are available.

Not sure if the middle one is cheap. I bought all mine before everyone jumped on the band wagon and the price went up.

There's a guy on the Judson website who sells repo stickers as well as complete rebuild kits for the Marvel Mystery Inverse Oilers, if anyone needs such information.

I would say yes they exist, as these kits were available for many cars. Would it be easy to find one, probably not. However, there were universal kits that allowed one to tap into an existing vacuum port on the manifold. You simply screwed in an adaptor with a tiny oriface. You ran tubing from that back to the oiler. I know I have an adaptor or two somewhere.

Yes, but will be awhile before I locate it and get a picture. We moved halfway across the US and some of my stuff is stored in my father's shop. Although it is only 180 miles away, finding time is the rub.

My NOS Shaler kit has a list of kits available effective Feb. 15, 1954 and states kits for both 53-54 Packard 4V carbs and 54 Chysler 4V carbs. I don't know if that included a base plate or if it had the aforementioned adaptors.

You want to make sure the carb plate has holes into both throats. There are some that only has one hole into one port. This will only lubricate 4 cylinders. I "T"d into the vacume line for the Columbia rear on some of my cars. Attached is the 39 P/U and 39 convertible sedan useing the Columbia vacume line. G.M.

Instructions that come with the Ampco oiler advise to put a coil or two in the line to absorb engine vibration and reduce hardening on the copper line.

I believe the guy that sells the Ampco oilers has the adaptors for the 4 barrel carbs. My copper lines are long enough that they won't work harden in one spot. G.M.

I figured out that the tubing that came with mine is 3/16". The parts stores in my neck of the woods are not doing a very good job keeping their brass fittings bins stocked any longer, opting for those damn displays with fittings on cardboard/plastic containers which do not have the compression Tee's. But, alas, I am seeing them on the 'bay. So, if anyone is trying to hook up their oiler to a multi-carb set up like me, maybe this will help.

For a 4 bbl, I think you would just have to find a 3/8" or thicker aluminum base plate to put under the carb and drill it (21/64"?, I don't have the AMPCO instructions in front of me but I think that was the dimension for a 1/8" npt) about 1/2" deep in the center edge between the two primaries. Then, before tapping for the NPT fitting, you would drill into that hole diagonally into each primary throat with a tiny bit, maybe 1/16". After that, tap the hole and install the NPT fitting. I don't think I would bother plumbing the secondaries.
