I had mine installed when I purchased the tubes from Coker. They charged only for the stem, no labor !

I found the description on the web site, but installation still doesn’t make sense to me. You actually cut out a good rubber stem to use these?

The previous owner had them installed before I bought the car. They look nice, but are they any better than rubber stems?

Yes, that is how it is done or buy tubes with them installed. You will still need the bridge washer etc to install.

The nicd thing about the metal stems on our cars is that they don't dry rot and become torn after some years of driving. Much harder to get a leak on a metal one than rubber.

Well...just how did you envision it be done?

I have done it slightly different but still get the same end. Six of one...half a dozen of the other ways.

Based on what I read and the size of the base of the metal stem, I envisioned cutting the entire old stem, including its base, out of the tube. That would have been an expensive mistake because that would have been much too big of a hole in the tube.

Al Lapore's article is the best way to modify tubes for metal valve stems. His method doesn't leak!

Not sure if this is it but it came out in The Restorer MAFCA:

“The Installation and Care of Valve Stem Hardware”: TR/35/1/6-7 (1990)*6
“Replacing Rubber Valves Stems with Metal Valve Stems without Damaging the Paint On Your Wheels”: TR/35/1/8-9 (1990)*6

Vol. 35 #1 and Vol 6 of How to Restore your Model A Ford
