I am trying to restore a 48 for a man. Does anyone know the correct finish for the cast iron base?

Low gloss black.

The challenge with refinishing the base is that most paint will not hold up when gas invariably drips/seeps onto it. What I did on my last set of 48's was use CeraKote ceramic finishes - their 'H' version (bake on). It is impervious to gas or even lacquer thinner.

One has to blast the base, pre-bake all oils out of it, mask it off and spray the coating on (never touching the surface with your hands). If you do the prep correctly and spray two thin coats of Cerakote (then bake it) - you'll have an excellent finish (much better than any carb restorer that I've ever seen).

Here is a picture of a 48. The body was also coated with a satin-nickel type of finish (obviously non-standard). I used the satin-black coatings on the base and all linkage related components.

I was tired of ugly, stained carbs (they always end up that way) - so this was an experiment. The good news is that when they get a bit gas stained, I take a toothbrush and lacquer thinner to clean them off - doesn't bother the coatings one bit.

Hey Bruce, that is a small Atlas Lathe - that I use all the time for numerous tasks. It once belonged to a retired tool and die maker, so he really kept things in nice shape, built the "bench/cabinet" for it, etc.. It is nice for a multitude of small tasks.

I somehow use it and a small mill on every engine or mechanical rebuild project I get my claws into. My Dad bought it when I was a teen-ager - so that I could use it to make pieces/parts needed for his dog-tag business. Dad didn't know how to use machine tools, but he supplied my brother and I with them so we could help him at the family owned business. My brother and I made all the punches/inserts for the various dog-tag shapes the customers needed and other parts for the punch presses. Neither of us had any teachers, we just figured stuff out by watching others at times on machines and reading a few books. Boy I wish the internet existed back then! LOL

I've now had it for the last 30 years. I only wish I had a bigger lathe and mill - for those occasional "big" jobs!

I recently had Michael Driskell at Third Gen rebuild this Stromberg 97 carburetor. The paint is Cerakote as previoulsy mentioned. It is gas and oil resistant.

I wound up using Tool Black but wasn't satisfied so finished with VHT black after Zinc coating.

I'm not familiar with cerakote, but I always use a 2 part urethane on motors and motor parts. Face it...its gonna get fuel spilled on it at some point. Enamel, like bill hersch, just cant hold up to that. forget anything in a spray can. Model A guys swear by Testors model paint for carbs, but...its enamel, how can it work? Wanna be able to pressure wash it ? use real paint, like painting the body
