Default engine numbers

i swore i wasn't going to bring home any more rusty junk,but.... some one told me about an a engine on an old winch at a reasonable price. in is in my garage now. this winch has a ton of local history. in the early 1900's carr lumber company logged acres that have now become pisgah national forest. they would lay a track up a hollow, log that out, pull up the tracts and move to the next hallow. there was a shop that did repair work on some of the railroad equipment, replacing the wheels on the axles. this winch was used to lift the axles onto the machinery that did the work. it has a tractor seat where the guy sat and ran the winch, and all this is on some steel rails. i think it was once suspended high in the shop on some type of trolley system, all of which is gone now. now my question... only a star and a couple of 1's is all that is left of the numbers. is there any way to raise the rest of the numbers where the block is rusted away, or have i watched too many csi shows? there is a big transmission on the back of the engine leading me to beleve it was in an aa truck. any ideas??
