Correct coil and condenser for my '41 PU
Hello all,
I've been using the search function here trying to find some info on a coil and condenser for my '41 PU. I've only had this truck for a short while and am trying to sort through it. It had sit since the mid '90's and I don't have any history on it. One of my problems have been that the truck will run for 15 to 20 minutes and then cut off, won't restart until it sits for a while. The gas tank was rotten and I've since replaced it, but it done the same thing after replacing the tank. I was checking into replacing the condenser and came up with this one from NAPA ECH FA49. I was searching here last night and ran across a post that recommended this Bosch blue coil Bosch 00012/9220081083 Ignition Coil. Are these correct for my stock '41? It has been updated to 12v if that makes a difference. As always thanks in advance for the support, Randy |

Same symptom for me. X 2 what GM said. It was the coil.

Re: Correct coil and condenser for my '41 PU
What motor do you have? is it the stock one or the later 8BA flathead? What distributor do you have? It would be good to know these answers in order to give answers. If you have a round coil separate from the distributor you can buy a new coil from Napa Auto Parts along with the condenser. If your coil is part of the distributor you will need to have that one rebuilt and buy the appropriate condenser.

If you currently have the "can" style coil, then the Bosh coil will work.

randy933......Before we go ANY farther, you need to describe what your distributor looks like (or post a photo), because you've stated that it is STOCK for '41. Stock for '41 will have a coil mounted on the distributor, yet some of your descriptors indicate something later in configuration. DD

I'm assuming it has the coil adapter plate on the distributor.

Re: Correct coil and condenser for my '41 PU
So presumably your coil has an adaptor plate on the top?? Originally the distributor would have had the coil mounted directly to the distributor. The Bosch blue coil is the recognised go to coil for simple 12V applications as no ballast is necessary. there was a thread on this forum recently showing where they were available at a bargain price.

Ah...it now makes sense that your distributor is likely original type, fitted with one of those COIL RE-LOCATING adapters......makes sense now! DD

I hate to sound vague, but I'm not sure exactly what I have. I've tried to upload a photo, but can't get it to go. It looks like my file size is too large.

This may help. Sorry. I switched from my phone to a digital camera. Uploaded in a second.

No need to be sorry, its a new platform for ya but you got it figured out quickly.
That is an interesting coil... looks almost like a coil for an electronic ignition. But I'm probably wrong. |

I think you would be better served by the Bosch coil you mentioned. I have no idea of the properties of the one that's on there now, but there's a chance it may be a mismatch. Worst case, it'll at least look better than what you presently have.

Re: Correct coil and condenser for my '41 PU
New single post coils are set up for electronic ignition. If you are using standard points ignition then you will likely also need a new condenser. It's hard to say what the points look like without removing the distributor and inspecting them. A person should really check all the ignition stuff out. Also see if it still has a ballast resistor. Modern coils won't need it and they can also be a heat related problem if it's a reproduction. If it's already been removed then no problem. When these old vehicles get converted to 12-volt, they need some special attention to get it all right.

Re: Correct coil and condenser for my '41 PU
Plus if it doesn't have the proper internal resistance you'll just be burning points up.

Re: Correct coil and condenser for my '41 PU
That coil looks like it came from a GM electronic ignition. Those put out some serious voltage. It's definitely the wrong coil for your application using the adapter on your distributor.
