The Ford Barn

Greetings,
Due to health complications, I'm still working on my brakes. Anywho, I final!y got the old studs out of the front hub with ballpeen persuasion. With a neat little tool and an Impact drill I installed the new studs. I have new front drums from D Carpenter, and am waiting for some wheel cyls from Rock.
Now the question: Both hubs have a notch on the outside edge. Does any one know why they are there? I Will try to attach photo's. For information, there is nothing that I can see inside or outside the old drums that line up with the notches.

Just a guess, but I think it was used during the manufacturing process to index the lug bolt holes.

I was thinking along those lines, but it doesn't put a stud at TDC. Also, doesn't the notch affect the balance? JPL

I doubt rather seriously that the notch is for balance purposes, but "tubman" makes a pretty good (WAG) suggesting possible indexing purposes. But notably, all of the '42 - '48 drums with the flange on the ouitside have the same notch. And they all seem to be in the same spot, right in the middle between two studs.
