Default Over heating issue?

How can I tell the difference between a bad head gasket and a cracked block?

What are the symptoms ? Do you have bubbling in the radiator?
Did you do a compression test?
I'm not sure that you could tell, but the failure rate of head gaskets exceeds the failure rate of heads.
When you remove the head (would be required for either condition) you will need to examine the gasket carefully. You can normally tell a blown gasket when you see it.
