Tools for setting valve lash

My friend and long time machinist gave these to me today. His Dad ran a machine shop in Montgomery Ala back in the 40s and it stayed open until the late 1990s. Back in the day they rebuilt lots of flatheads and had a row of about 10 KRW engine stands bolted to the floor. He said these were used to put pressure on the cam while the valve lash was set . The skinny part is under spring pressure and is inserted down through the guide hole and rest against the lifter. Then you push down on the big end sticking up and insert a horseshoe keeper. Thought they were kinda neat, never seen or heard of them before . Don’t see any name on them .

I had the same reaction. I believe the brain trust lost some info. I believe they are used to grind the valve seats. They make it possible to maintain good centricity without the use of a guide. The small end is spring loaded for raising and lowering the grinding stone off the seat when you want to start and stop seat cutting.

Not sure what the grooves top and bottom do to enhance the result, unless they are to use keepers to fix the position of the mandrel.

Makes sense now. With spring loaded guide ,believed it used for hand lapping

No, they are made to insert into the block with the small end inserted against the lifter to apply downforce on the cam ,one on each side. They have a heavy spring pressure and they remove any slack if you will from the cam to set the valve lash

It will turn but they keep it centered.

Keeping it centered on the low side of the lobe? Do you re arraign it for each lobe?
