Hopefully the excess clearance isn't from a cam lobe going south.

BTW, why is "going south" a bad thing? I like the south. Tennessee was T shirt weather on Tuesday, and I came home to white crap all over my driveway.

Could also be a lifter is loose in the block, from 80 years of use. I had one like that and it would tick about 3 times, then quiet for awhile, then tick some more. Chrysler tappets solved the problem, they are 5/8" stem diameter.
