Another thing, the replacement sleaves are much harder then the original, once you replace them chances are you won't have to change them again.
The maintenance performed on these cars today is much better then when they were just viewed as another "used car" I also found not to use the new bearings available today and stick with good used original ones. Quality of the new ones is poor |

From my experiences I suggest grinding to the final desired diameter. The Rockwell of the original material makes it almost impossible to achieve consistent size and finish requirements with a cutting tool. The new sleeve should be a press fit on the housing with a very finely textured surface finish. The first pieces I did on the lathe with final finishing accomplished with tool post grinder. Later I decided to do them with the crankshaft grinder.
One other possible area to look at is the straightening of the housing before beginning the machining operations. |
