1928-29 AA Bumper brackets
Since the AA wheels are larger are the bumper brackets longer, or the same as car brackets? Thanks. Bob

Re: 1928-29 AA Bumper brackets
28/9 bumper arms are the same for cars and AA trucks. The parts book shows part numbers AA-17754-BR for the right hand arm and AA-17755-BR for the left hand bumper arm. These part numbers are the same in the passenger car section and AA truck section of the parts book.

Re: 1928-29 AA Bumper brackets
Somewhere they changed the prefix from A to AA. In the August 1929 parts book
they show A-17754-D and A-17755-D. On he MAFFI site the first date they show the AA prefix is February 1930. The February 1930 parts book shows the A prefix but there is note to order the number with the AA prefix. |

Re: 1928-29 AA Bumper brackets
Not sure this will help, but at the museum we have a bin with numerous front bumper brackets. There are several different lengths of them... but I do not recall which is for what.

Bob C is offline Report Post Bob: The parts book I was referring to included 1932 with the later AA prefixes. Thanks for the info from the earlier parts books. Interesting that Ford had made those parts number changes. |

Also, understand that the MAFFI database is a HUGE asset to the hobby however not all information that is at the archives has been listed in the MAFFI database. I have found many prints for items like fasteners and other sub-component items at the archives that have not yet been listed on the MAFFI site. Therefore don't assume that just because something is listed (-or not listed) that it is the total story. |

Page E-34 of the Standards say "Front bumper arms were the same as for the A
chassis through December 1929." |

Re: 1928-29 AA Bumper brackets
AA's used A-chassis front bumper brackets for 1928-1929 as per the RGJS:
"Front bumper arms were the same as for the A chassis through December 1929. Beginning in January 1930 front bumper arms were as shown in figure 33 (attached). These arms were designed to place the bumper clamps about 3” closer together allowing either 1929 or 1930 A chassis bumpers to be used (some early 1930 AA’s used 1929 A chassis front bumpers)." Note that starting January 1930 the bumper arms for the AA's had an AA prefixed part ID and were a different design. Using Ford Parts Price Lists shows what service parts were available at the date of the list. This does not show what was used in production.

Thanks Neil. By chance do you have a copy of the A-17754-* prints to verify application? I actually have this on my list to look at when Benson re-opens however in the interim there appears to have been an A-17754-A, A-17754-B, A-17754-C, A-17754-D, and A-17754-DR for the 28/29. Then in the early (Feb 1931) PPL, it references ordering a AA-17754-B. Looking on each of those prints specifically for application may be the key to determining whether they were the same as Pass chassis. The revisions must have been fairly significant to assign a new Suffix to the root number. Any theories why so many changes?? |

Sorry, I don't have any bumper arm engineering drawings. I did compare my Feb. 1930 AA front bumper arms to 1928-1929 front bumper arms (on both A-chassis and AA-chassis). The Feb. 1930 AA front bumper arms were not the same and were as pictured above. I just looked at A-chassis parts in my Oct. 30 1930 PPL - for 1928-1929 RH/LH front bumper arms it notes to order AA-17754-B/55-B. My guess is that Ford just didn't make the original A-chassis arm by that date. It seems the PPL should have specified ordering both AA-17754-B/55-B (not just one side).
