With an updraft carb it shouldn't take much throttle to clear a rich condition.
I never touch the choke during starting, unless it's a cold engine. |

Depending on one's particular carburetor, many times a flooded engine can be cleared by opening the throttle all the way & cranking the engine.
Some carburetors I have need to be choked very slightly when engine is cold winter & summer. The current rebuilt Zenith I am using now never needs choking. |

Hold the throttle wide open while cranking like mentioned above. But also be prepared, once it fires and you have it held wide open you need to be really quick to adjust your spark to meet the rpm so it stays running and after that ease up on the throttle. All of this shouldn't take you more than 2-3 seconds after you feel it start.

turn fuel off to carb, make sure choke isnt on, hold throttle wide open, crank engine till it starts, retard the throttle, let engine run till it dies, then turn fuel back on dont choke and start engine

Weak spark and over choking.
