Float-a-motor...
I currently have the radiator and cylinder head off of my '31 roadster. When I purchased the car the owner said the he couldn't get the hand crank to fit in the pulley...it wouldn't line up. Now that I have the front portion of the car off I can see that the engine is sitting up on the front float-a-motor mount at such a height that the hand crank wouldn't mesh with the pulley. Tightening down on the mount helps with the crank/pulley alignment but takes pretty much all the float-a-motor spring suspension out of play. This doesn't seem right as the engine should be free to "float" on the mount and not be bound tightly to it. Am I missing something? Is there an alignment or adjustment on the back motor mounts that could cause the engine to be cocked at an angle so as to not allow alignment between the hand crank and pulley? I want this to be right before I start putting the car back together...thanks

Re: Float-a-motor...
I have Float-a-motors on my pickup. The side and rear mounts are all I use, the front is stock Model A and everything lines up perfectly.

Re: Float-a-motor...
Bent frame? Fairly common find when you buy an A.

Re: Float-a-motor...
I did the same thing as Ray said and got the same results, everything lines up fine. That hand crank is real handy when you get ready to time your car. Ron

looking straight down on the mount with it sitting on a flat surface as in the pic the bolts are uneven. the top of the mount is shown here with the more visible bolt... Last edited by Mitch//pa; 07-09-2012 at 10:42 AM. |

Re: Float-a-motor...
I have rear float-a-motor mounts and stock front mounts on both my A's and the crank lines up on both.
