Default removing spare tire indention on 40 pu fender

I have seen many 40 ford pick ups with the right rear fender spare tire indention
removed. do you cut it out and just flip and reweld? or do you have a custom patch panel fabricated? any tricks that I should know before I start?Gary

A guy just did that on a TV show last week. Flipping won't work without a LOT of reshaping.
He made a new one from sheet stock with a hammer and sandbag and an english wheel.
You could do the whole thing on a sandbag if need be.

Some of them could be fiberglass repo's that are made without the dimple.

Possibly a patch could be made from opposite side spare fender?

It would seem to me that the patch should be made from a same side scrap fender.

What are your skills, tools available and where are you located. There are probably a few different ways to do this but fabricating a new patch and tig welding it in is probably the best approach.

It should be treated as if it were a dent in the fender.
Starting with heavy hammer and progressing to hammer and dolly.
Now you will have excess metal that will have to be heat shrunk (heat, hammer and dolly, water quench).
Followed by pick and filing.
No cutting out, no English wheel or unnecessary welding.

I know diddly about body work but some years ago I went to look at a flathead for sale in the San Fernando Valley IIRC. Didn't buy the engine but the guy showed me his gorgeous '40 Ford p/u that he removed the spare tire dimple on. He said he used an English wheel. Other than that I don't have any more details. Judging by his truck it can be done and it really added to an already great looking '40. If you do decide to remove the dimple post some photos of the finished job and how you did it.

I'm guessing that what you usually see is a later fender bolted to a 40.
When I'd restored my '40 pickup, the original fender was rough. Later fenders, unlike a proper '40 fender, are all over the place and cheap. I had to graph the indentation in to the later fender and replace the lower part as it's
different in '40.

Replacing the lower part isn't necessary for a "driver" but is for a true restoration.

remove the fender, place the fender on the lawn pound it out with a hard rubber mallet, do not use a metal hammer which will stretch the area. then use a english roll, do not roll out the peak on the fender a 40 has a slight peak on the upper part of the fender. the modification will look great with no filler............

I'm not a body man by any account, but because the dimple is concaved into the fender you simply can't "pound it out". The more you pound it out, it will tend to grow larger and stretch the fender out of shape. The concave dimple is technically larger then the hole. I would cut the dimple out and find someone with an English wheel to make you a patch with the correct shape.

Thank you... I only wish I was able to make a larger piece of metal a lot smaller. It would make my life so much easier at times.

Me? I'd pound this back after cutting it completely across the dimpled area both "up and down" and "side to side". Then, once I'd achieved the shape I want, I'd remove any excess metal and weld the cuts, grind and metal finish.
Some metal will have to be removed.
Unlike Kim Kard. ya can't stuff 10# of crap in a 5# bag.

rethinking the removal, may just leave it in , then if I later add the spare tire , I have the dimple!

Those trucks are SO good lookin', and that spare is SOOO ugly, that I think I'd have to carry it in the passenger seat before I'd "ugly-up" the side of my truck with one. Underneath, or in the bed.....SOMETHING! DD

They do look a little better with a cover on the tire, but they are still ugly.
