I purchased a burnt 39, I used the motor, would seals need to be replaced in the transmission to reuse? What is a nominal selling price for a good 39 transmission?

Wouldn't be a bad idea to inspect it before you install and it's got bad seals. Ounce of prevention normally helps.

The transmission only has one seal , it's in the front bearing retainer.

36 CS, you might want to get your hands on Mac VanPelt's transmission book. It will tell you almost everything you want to know about your '39 transmission. Also, Mac VP is a great source for parts. They have an online website and a catalogue.

Replacing the seal might be the least of your issues with it ...

I recently purchased a " '39 trans " with Genuine Lincoln gears including the 81A double detent tower and stick for $120. The seller would not guarantee all the components were in good shape. I know for sure I would not install a swap meet, ebay
or Craigs list trans without a good tear down no matter how shiny the paint was.
Another fly in the ointment is T-5's and C-4's are really invading the trans
market. Crating and shipping adds about $250 min to the bill.

I paid $250 for a flea market 39 and $150 for some replacement parts. High but tranny is in and running fine. I've seen several at $350+. Be sure the gears are correct. The "39" tranny I had in the truck was a '37 with '35 gears"

36CS, Charlie ny rebuilt my '39 transmission, and when he sent it back to me, it was "as good as new" and his cost was both reasonable and fair. Highly recommend Charlie!!

Rebuilding a 39 trans is very easy even without an instruction manual. I've done several.

If the engine worked out of this burned 1939, the transmission should also work. Nothing should have been exposed and burned.

Most of the heat radiates up from the fuel source but it can get really hot if it's trapped in a burning garage. The whole car can experience heat damage with some sagging frame members or axle housings if that's the case. I've seen it happen before. It all depends on the conditions of the fire.

I have a friend that buys fire salvaged big trucks. His rule of thumb is if the lubricant did not burn out of it then the components inside are OK. If lubricant is burned out then the gears etc are scrap prices.

Seems like about half of the transmissions I disassemble the case is toast! Where the thrust washer rides against the case if the babbitt is worn off it is steel against cast iron! Last one I bought for two hundred I used the double detent shift tower and a few gears and that is it. I used to buy NOS cases from Dennis Carpenter for $75.00 but they have been long gone. A 35 case is usually good because it has brass coated thrust washers on both ends and locked to the case but it does limit your gear selection.

I paid $30.00 for a rebuilt 46/48 trans. Took the gears out of it and installed in a 39 case that I bought for $70.00. It works like new. You just need to be patient and look around. the trans was under a guys trailer at a swap meet. He just wanted it gone.

deuce has got it....the rear thrust face being chewed is a heart breaker on 78 series cases. I have repaired a few for guys who absolutely required the trans their car was
born with.....not cheap. 48 series cases work well too but of course require just a bit of
massaging of the cluster.
