generator
I don,t have access to a Growler so I used my ohm meter on the commutator segments ..180 degrees apart they were about4 ohms ..and about .2 of a ohm segment to segment except one which was .7......and com to rotor was about 2 megs all sound good to me.....put a battery charger and an amp meter on the field coils and it drew about 1 amp ...to me the armature is ok but fields are shorted ....the generator will motor but not too fast
Just wondering if I'am right thanks |

Re: generator
What generator are you working on?
There's a 5 brush powerhouse, a 3 brush powerhouse, the common long style Autolite, and the post Model A production are often found on A's. Where are you located? Maybe someone near you has a growler. |

Re: generator
Why are you doing what you are doing?
If an armature is not cooked, has not thrown solder and has no dead bars I don't even put them on a growler. If I turn and undercut the armature I will use a growler. Depending on the answer to the first question I'd put it together and use the car as a test bench. Shorted items typically draw more current re the field coils. BTW if you were in the area I'd give you a growler.

Re: generator
The Generator was given to me,It was suppose to a rebuild but he could not get it to work ..I put it on my car but it also did not charge ....well decided to flash it,,,,it ran in the opposite direction of the motor...so poles are backwards...switched the poles ..motored in the right way ,,back on the car ,,, but same results ...so a few more checks,,,,my car charges fine with it's own gen...thinking the fields are shorted ..this is the reason for the checks

BTW, the field should draw about 3 to 4 amps on 6 volts. |

Re: generator
while u are doing all this remember that a good generator will not motor very fast at all. You said it motored but "not too fast"
You are making the gen do something it wasn't designed to do, so it is not gonna spin at 500 rpm. And don't motor it too long, it will overheat quickly Also, Tom W has had gens that would motor and not charge
