leaking brake fittings 47 1 ton pickup
Hi guys , I have problem with brake fluid leaking from the rear wheel cylinder brass fitting between the brass block and the slave cylinder on both sides at the rear . I have copper washers on both sides of the brass block , but it only leaks on the slave cylinder side. Now ,the brass block has 6 or so grooves machined into it on both the clamping surfaces . Can any one tell me were these brass blocks made so you don't use copper washers? This leak is pissing me off . Any fixs for this

are you using silicone fluid? if so the molecules are smaller than convential fluid and are hard to stop leaking. the grooves are there so the soft copper washers will indent and help stop any chance of leaking. one copper washer per connection and tighten with appropriate wrenches so a lot of torgue can be applied

If you can't get new (soft) copper washers then heat the old ones up to cherry red and immediately quench in cold water.
This brings the work hardened old washers back to softened condition. Worked every time for me and I am using silicone brake fluid.

Also if you tighten them, loosen and then tighten again this helps.

Never heard of stat-o-seal so I looked them up:
Introduction Most fluid systems have fasteners that must be sealed. Stat-O-Seals are really nice, I've used them on the aircraft a few times. They work great but are rather expensive. On Fords I've always annealed the copper washers and put a smear of Loctite 515 on them when assembling; works well.

Are the rear wheel cylinders finished with a flat surface for the copper washer to seat on to? I've never dealt with truck parts, but know the car cylinders don't have such a surface.

I read that as only the connection block, not the wheel cylinders? I would start by trying annealed washers (as in post #3). |

Hi guys , the groves are in the brass block on both sides . I am going to try those stat-o -seals , we call them something else over here . I now have the same problem at the master cylinder on the cylinder side. Can only be the silicone fluid , but I can live with it cause it don't take the paint off after all the hard work painting the underside

I have owned and repaired 4 old BSA single cyl motorcycles. Solid copper head gaskets. Never bought a new one because an old guy showed me "Heat the old gasket cherry red, pick up with a coat hanger and drop in the toilet to anneal it". I'm no metalurgist, but it makes them soft again.

I am told Stat-o-Seals or similar product wont last long in Dot3 4 and 5.1 fluid but should be OK with Dot5 . I seemed to have had a win with the rear wheel slave cylinders and the Stat O Seals , but I have to wait until the excess fluid from the leak on the master cylinder has gone to see if I have had any success there. The Dot 5 is bastard stuff for sitting in around washers and bolt heads then drops out and you think its still weeping around the seal

The other names for these seals are Dowty washers or bonded rubber washers
