Where does the positive battery cable get grounded to? the head?

It is a 49, and not a 39

My 52 Merc has the ground cable going to the intake manifold. Seems to work well but I have no idea if this is original. I've heard the best results come from running a ground cable direct from the battery to one of the starter bolts.

There is a threaded hole in the very front of the LH cylinder head. You can barely see it in the attached picture (circled). 5/16-18 thread I believe.

I don't know about cars but is that not the mount for clamp that holds wiring going to generator?

On cars the generator wiring clamp is on the rear thermostat housing bolt.
