Re: condenser fiber washer
I'm mystified by this washer thing... this fiber washer goes between the head of the condenser screw and tab on the lower distributor plate, correct? Electrical connection is made from the end of the brass condenser boss and the back side of the tab, correct?
So what is the use of the washer? Someone said to avoid grounding (what? ) on the distributor body. I have been running for 50 years, have never seen a fiber washer. Joe B |

Re: condenser fiber washer
When you screw in the pop-out cable it is possible to push then tab on the end of the lower plate the condenser is attached to up against the casting. This will short out the condenser. The diameter of the fiber washer will prevent the tab from making contact.

Re: condenser fiber washer
to answer a previous question: where is Glide?
Glide, Oregon is about 15 miles east of Roseburg Oregon on the Umqua river...a beautiful area in SW Oregon. just north of Medford. |

Re: condenser fiber washer
I really having trouble following the text in this thread.
Is the picture in post #24 correct? If so, that really helps. Bruce, in post #17, you say that you glue the washer to the tab on the condenser. Do you mean the tab on the lower plate? And Tom, in post#20, same question--glue the washer to the tab on the condenser or the tab on the lower plate? Chrs, in post#19, are you saying turn the distributor upside down? With the shaft sticking straight up? I can't understand how you are turning this thing. Please, I'm not trying to argue or criticize. I just can't follow what you guys are saying. On my recent rebuild, I finally threw the washer back in the bag because I couldn't make any sense out of putting it in anywhere. Yes, the new screw was too long, so I bagged it also and used the old screw, which was not too long. Doesn't this washer interfere with the electrical connection between the condenser and the lower plate? Isn't the electrical connection between the screw and the lower plate, and not between the condenser outer body and the lower plate? And before you ask, my rebuild of the distributor was a total failure. I obviously don't know what I'm doing, so please help! W. Michael |

Re: condenser fiber washer
Post #24 is mine. Assuming I put it together correctly (my first distributor rebuild), the fiber washer is on the outside of the lower plate. The fiber washer sandwiches the lower plate to the center contact of the condenser via the screw.
I too was confused by other posts that mention a tab. I was thinking this meant the tab on the other end of the condenser. But I think they really means the tab in the lower plate that the fiber washer lays against. |

Re: condenser fiber washer
Well, here's response #32 (you forgot to count yourself PatrickL).
Reporting my results as requested: With the washer attached properly, and a different coil, 'Bessie' the RPU fired right up! Just a little 'tweaking' of the timing and she'll be good to go.... Thanks to everyone for your responses. |
