Fan To Hose Clearance On 40
I just put a new stock fan and radiator hose on my 40 wagon. I notice that clearance from the R/H (Passenger Side) lower radiator hose to the tip of the fan blade is only about 3/16". Do I need to remove the new hose and cut it or ?? Is it normal to have the blade so close to the hose. All is original configuration with nothing altered. I worry that when it gets hot and the hose swells, it might hit. Anybody else aware of this or have this situation?

Re: Fan To Hose Clearance On 40
Maybe the hose that is close to the fan is installed upside down. The 40 lower rad hoses have a top and bottom.

Re: Fan To Hose Clearance On 40
As stated above, there is a tight bend and a not so tight bend. Having it upside down will put the vertical part of the hose further forward.

Re: Fan To Hose Clearance On 40
I don't think it is upside down but could be. I copied the original orientation because of the heater hose fitting that was installed towards the engine on the original hose. I installed it so the sharper bend is at the radiator. Is that correct? I didn't notice this tight of clearance on the old one but might have been the same???

Re: Fan To Hose Clearance On 40
If you flip the hose over so that the gentle bend is toward the radiator and the sharp bend is toward the engine, the hose interferes with the sway bar. So which way is correct??

Also be aware that the reproduction hoses were modeled after the "first design" and as such don't fit the cars with a factory sway bar properly. You will most likely notice the hose pressing against the sway bar. That's incorrect obviously...
While it is very possible your hose is installed "upside - down" it may also require trimming.

Re: Fan To Hose Clearance On 40
Thanks for the input and picture. I called C&G and Bob Drake's today and they both confirmed I have it installed correctly with the sharp bend toward the radiator. It looks just like the picture you sent. Guess it's ok but I am going to try to trim some off where it goes into the engine to move the hose slightly to the rear to increase the clearance a little.
Thanks to all! |

Re: Fan To Hose Clearance On 40
Good info. I suppose you can consider also that the fan only tends to move forward of it's normal position. From general "pull" of the fan blades and engine movement during hard acceleration (Torque tube push) or during an emergency brake crash stop (Weight of power unit flexing on mounts). That's why you sometimes see a chunk taken out of the back of the radiator by the fan after an accident.

Re: Fan To Hose Clearance On 40
I don't think the factory sway bar is an issue. My woody has the factory sway bar and if you install the hose correctly with the sharp bend toward the radiator, you have lots of clearance to the sway bar. The problem is the fan clearance not the sway bar if you install the hose in the right direction.

Re: Fan To Hose Clearance On 40
A little trimming from one end of the hose.

Re: Fan To Hose Clearance On 40
Found the hot ticket for fan clearance. Install lower hose with sharp bend side toward radiator. Trim 1/4" from hose at other end (water pump side). Install tight against water pump and 1/4" back on the radiator side. Clearance to the fan now is over 1/2" !!!
