Front fender well covering
I have a 1928 Ford Model A with spare tires stored in the front fender wells, one on each fender.
I like the car and it’s mechanically sound. However I don’t like the look of those spare tires sitting in the front fenders. It doesn’t look right. It looks too much like a wedding car. It’s to fancy for my liking. I want to remove both spares and carry a single spare at the back of the car. Do I have to replace the front fenders or can I just cut out the wells and weld a new piece of metal to cover the hole in the fender. The plan is to change the colour of the car from a light and dark brown, to a dark and light green. |

Re: Front fender well covering
If you have the skills, the fender wells could be removed and patched
I would suggest replacing the fenders. If the welled fenders are decent they would be worth some money. Then purchase non-welled fenders. Much easier |

Thank you. That makes a lot of sense.

Re: Front fender well covering
many stock guys like the welled fenders and rodders tend toward the plain fenders, as they like to leave the hood sides off and show their engine.
in recent yrs, I have found the plain fenders go for more then the welled fenders. Wasnt like that 20 yrs ago. you should offer a swap on a few sites. might get lucky......... |

Do I need to separate and lift the body in order to remove and install the front fenders? |

Re: Front fender well covering
There’s a lot to disassemble
Hood shelves, latches, headlight bar and all the bolts to RB et al But you don’t have to lift the body from the chassis |

Re: Front fender well covering
Side mounts are nice since you can then install a trunk in the rear and have the back seat open to carry passengers.

Re: Front fender well covering
i just put side mount wells in both front fenders, we should have traded, lol
if it were i, advertise on the for sale/wanted part of this forum, then if you cant find a set without wells, i would make patches and fill them in.

Re: Front fender well covering
This is definitely doable as you suggest however for most people, fabricating a compound reverse curve panel to replace the missing area is a bear. I have a very well-tooled sheetmetal shop and we had quite a few hours in making a pair of panels that were correctly shaped. It might be an easier option to find some trashed fenders that can be cannibalized for the needed area on the good fender.

Re: Front fender well covering
Brent is spot on
Making that is going to really require shrinking, stretching and making curvature/crown in the metal patch. While all can be done by hand, a English wheel, shrinker and stretcher would save many hours. Not many have such or even access to such |
