Hinge Pin Removal
Any tips on how to remove the hinge pins from the 31 SW 4D TS door hinges?
I have pumped heat into the hinge but the pins will not budge. Thanks, |

Re: Hinge Pin Removal
Drilling isn't that bad. Take care finding the center and start with a small drill and work your way up. It's hard to over come ridges worn in the pin with force. I did take the door off to get in a comfortable position to drill.
Good luck, Hugh |

Re: Hinge Pin Removal
In my case, I have the doors off the original rusted body that I had. So, there is no need to save the doors. I only want to save the hinges to use with my "new" body.
So, step 1, grind down the rounded head on the top. step 2, drill down approximately one inch. step 3. turn door over step 4. drill down approximately one inch. step 5. use a punch to drive the pin out. Is this correct? Thanks, |

Re: Hinge Pin Removal
The head usually knocks right off with a side shot of a small chisel. Then drill like u mentioned
The pins are soft and drill easy |

Re: Hinge Pin Removal
If the doors were still mounted then you'd stick a large nail or screw into each removed pin to take the load off the next pin to be removed.

Re: Hinge Pin Removal
I had this very problem about a month ago. Tried heat, LOTS of heat to no avail. I ended up pushing them out with a C-clamp. I made a pusher tool on my lathe by taking a piece of about 5/8" shaft (about 3/4" long) and turned it down on one end so it had a 1/8" protrusion just smaller that 1/4" (so it's smaller that the pin), put a socket over the top if the hinge pin, the pushing tool on the bottom and clamped it together with a large C-clamp the tightened the clamp. The small protrusion on the bottom pushed the pin up into the socket. You don't need a lathe. you can just get a piece of shaft, drill a hole in the center and put a pin driving rod through it 1/8" longer that the shaft. If it's in tight, it should work the same.

Re: Hinge Pin Removal
I put a drop of Kano Kroil Penetrating Oil on the top and on the two slots on the hinge, left it to do its magic over night, and the pin popped right out the next morning.
